By now, most people have heard about or seen the post over on metagame talking abou the future of VS. Below is a list of the changes to occur on the VS scene:
- Focus more around hobby leagues - making better kits eventually evolving into City Championships
- City Championships will occur 4 times a year after each set release, basically a beefed up hobby kit for that month.
- Release Celebrations will take over Sneak Previews and occur after the release of a set.
- PC invites are going to be based off of rating rather than points. A rating of 2650 will snatch you an invite. This is to tutor to more hobby league players.
- The much anticipated $50K tourneys will continue to be just that, much anticipated.
- The purse at PC Indy has been reduced from $250K to $100K
- Gen Con So Cal has been cancelled. UDE is looking into other options. One of which is known as a Mega-Weekend, occuring in Columbus, OH on July 6-8.
- PCQs are done, No more!

Its pretty clear to me that this is going to make or break VS. I understand that UDE is trying to offset the cost of running this game by eliminating much of its financial support. What are some thoughts regarding the new setup? Will VS last or is it time to jump ship?

It would stand to reason that UDE is attempting not to stab itself in the back by competing with itself VS & WOW...a tough task as they're both big prize money games and both attractive to the same target audence. I don't play VS often enough to have good knowledge of the current state of the game....but I'm certainly intereted to see who this all pans out.

I guess the VS players kinda feel now what the Yu-Gi-Oh! players felt when VS came out and all the funding and profits from Yu-Gi-Oh! got streamed to VS instead.

Mega Weekend? I thought that weekend in Columbus was Origins?

It is Origins. UDE is going to run their Mega Weekend at the same time at a different venue so no one has to pay the entry fee to Origins. It looks like they're going to have two "big" events in Columbus. An amateur championship and a team sealed $10K for the release of Worlds Finest.

I was a Yugioh player before becoming a VS player and I agree to an extent. UDE never offered the payout for Yugioh like it did for VS. Honestly, I think UDE wanted to steal players away from MTG in hope of creating better competition in the TCG market. They failed, wasted alot of money and are now backpedaling to try to keep the game alive. I also completely agree with Danker's view about UDE trying to do too much at once with both VS and WOW. At first it looked like WOW was going to be huge and I thought that would be the end of VS, but from what I heard, WOW isn't as fun and is fading fast. Thoughts?

Not entirely correct,my friend. Yu-Gi-Oh! was never meant to have any sort of monetary payout but we could have used a better prize structure for SJCs along with grander events.

Anyway, I don't know how long WoW:TCG will last myself. I've already lost a lot of interest in it. =/

I realize Yugioh was never to include money payouts. I also agree that UDE could have done more to create better prizes for Yugioh. Saying that, Yugioh is tutored to a younger generation where winning prizes or money is not as important as having a cool new card they saw on TV. I stopped playing Yugioh when I was 22 not because it was a bad game, but because VS offered more opportunity to benefit from the hobby. VS, being tutored to older generations, needs the competition for money to fuel its success. I could create a game tomorrow that had huge payouts and you know what, people would play. On the other hand, if I created a game with some cool random prizes, the turnout wouldn't be as great. So while there is a similarity between Yugioh and VS with a sense of loss. There is no comparison on a support level.

UDE has responded to some of the feedback they have gotten in regards to the new changes. They are looking into a new form of a PCQ. Will they make enough changes to save the game?
