Looking Ahead 22 - Expressroid

I don't think I could have picked a shorter time span between talking about a card and when it would be released. However, considering we're getting the card actually before it's "original intended release", well, that amuses me. Since I was just talking about it, let's look a bit more into it.

Expressroid
Earth/Machine/4/400/1600
When this card is successfully Summoned, you can add 2 "roid" monsters from your Graveyard to your hand except for "Expressroid".

Where From: Gladiator's Assault
TCG Release: Syrus Truesdale Starter Deck

As I mentioned in the original thread, this card will get its effect no matter how it is summoned (Normal, Special, or Flip). However it is optional so you don't have to use the effect.

Expressroid is a solid anchor and support card for the Roid theme. His stats are not the best, but that's not why you'll be using him anyway. Expressroid allows you to recycle other Roid monsters back to your hand. For those of you who only care for the numbers, yes he is a +1 for you. While you can't return another Expressroid with this effect, any other one is fair game. In turn, this gives you a greater variety of support options you can use whether to summon the monsters you retrieved or to use them as discards for non-theme (yet still good) cards such as Snipe Hunter. The only catch is that you must have at least 2 Roid Monsters in your Graveyard, otherwise you cannot activate his effect.

3 out of 5 in a Roid themed deck. With the Gladiator's Assault cards combined with the original batch in Power of the Duelist (and whatever else that might be new in the Syrus Starter Deck), the Roid theme is a vastly underrated, yet perfectly solid deck type. They have a Draw Card, a Stall Card, a card that has the ability to activate Trap Cards from your hand (one of the few that isn't banned), and thanks to Expressroid, an all around recycler for the monsters. Definitely worth a look for people who want try playing with a very subtly strong deck type.

He's actually +2 card. (Expressroid on the field, and then 2x Roid monster in hand)

yeah, use them for quick discard like Snipe Hunter/Lightning Vortex/Card Destruction/etc. (Oh GOD, Graceful Charity combo with him would have been broken...) And with him, you can actually run Vehicroid Connection Zone without too much of a worry.

And I would say try to dump alot of roid monster in the grave as fast as possible so he won't be a dead card in hand. (probably like Future Fusion, Card Trooper, Magical Merchant, etc.)

I playtested this, and even WITH Expressroid, it's hard to pull off the Connection Zone.

This is the reason

First, to pull off Connection Zone,

If your going for the Jumbo Drill version

You need Expressroid, Connection Zone, and 1 of the 3 combination needed. (Say if your graveyard have Drill/Sub, then need Steam in hand already) That's a 3 card combo, a bit differcult.

Similar to say with Stealth Union. You still need Expressroid, Connection Zone, and then 1 of the 4 combos needed (except Expressroid, since that's already on field)

I would personally go for Jumbo Drill. Drill and Sub are good. And Steam is decent since it's a potential 2300ATK beatstick. But for Stealth Union, Truck and Stealth are kinda bad. Truck is only a 1000ATK, too weak to kill anything to equip itself something. It'll need an assist. And Stealth, it destroys s/t after it successfully attacks and at the end of battle phase AND have another Roid monster on field... that's way too many conditions. I mean, it can't destroy Saku/Ring/Torrential/Mirror/etc. It can like maybe kill Premature/CotH/Snatch Steal and that's about it.

Anyway, either build is a 3 card combo. Along with the fact that it needs ALOT of graveyard milling to make Expressroid any use. You can also go for the Snipe/Lightning discard version, but when I tested that, you'll need alot more cards.

Also, this card, you can also combo with Machine Duplication. That's 3x Expressroid meaning 6x Roid monster in hand advantage, (If you got that many monsters in the grave in the first place) I would say for a good Expressroid deck build, run 3x Card Trooper, 3x Expressroid and then 3x Machine Duplication. (you got Card Trooper AND Expressroid to choose from, that's good enough for 3x IMO)

Another fun combo with Expressorid is Ambulanceroid. That card lets you special summon a roid monster if that roid monster was from the graveyard, and then immediately added to hand. It was SUPPOSE to be a combo with Rescueroid, but Expressroid is WAY faster. So use Expressroid, and among the 2 roid added, you can immediately special summon 1 of them. The only prob is, Ambulanceroid is weakass monster also. (I think it was either 300~400ATK) So it'll be really hard to keep Ambulanceroid on the field, and then summon Expressroid.

--------

What WOULD have made Expressroid with Connection Zone a really good deck was if there is a Vehecroid Fusion monster that includes Expressroid as fusion, and it's only 3 PARTS. (Stealth Union is 4 parts) Then it's just Expressroid and Connection Zone in hand needed as the other 2 parts will be picked up by Expressroid. (ALOT easier if this was the case... probably that's why Steal Union is a 4 part, to not make Connection Zone broken) Yeah, if this was the case, you'll get out a huge machine fusion that cannot be destroyed. Seriously, the only way out is to either steal it, or bounce it.
