Curbing Arrogance

So today I'd though we could open up the discussion to somethings that fairly difficult to control, and that player arrogance. It seems that today more and more of our players are losing perspective on what the game is supposed to be.
Too often I see players bring the same level of play and attitude fit for regional tournaments or higher to local level tournaments. Too often I see "pro" players crush younger less experience players, just because the want to win.
The problem this causes it raises newer players expectations of the difficulty of local events. I'm not saying that local events should be a walk in the park, but it seems to me our goal is to try and have players have fun more then be majorally competive.
I'm had players quit after losing the first round, cheat, etc. These players are the ones supposed to be setting the example, but often they are the ones taking the game too seriouslly.
So why does this matter? For one thing I've had players not enter tournaments because a certain player(s) were entered. Saying that they don't want to deal with them, or they can never win so why bother. It also gets tiring both for us judges and more importantly the players to have to constantly put up with this type of behavior.
Overall it casts a negative reflection on the game as well as the store running events. It frustrates and discourages players as well as adding more frustrations to our already busy days.
So the question is what can be done in these types of situations. How can we get players to start realizing that events, particually local events should be about having fun, not winning all the time?
Personally, I think it's kind of sad, to see the kind of things players do and the way they act, all because they don't want to risk losing some points.
