More Machine Than Man
End of Match Procedure
from UDE's Player Management Forums
EoM procedures seem to be one of the most frequent topics of discussion on the board. People seeming to be abusing them or just not understanding them take up an awful lot of our time. Players also get rather annoyed, especially when they are playing a deck that cannot possibly win a sudden death game, that deck choice can determine the result of a match and not skill, as it should be.
What I'm asking is does anyone have any good ideas about alternatives to our current system? There are many complaints but very few ideas given. I'm actually fairly happy with our current systems as they mostly deal with long games quickly and fairly.
The only major alternative I've ever heard came from an L5R player. Apparently, L5R (like many of its features) is based on an honour system. In a tournament, players get 3 points for a match win, 1 point for a match loss, and 0 points for a match draw. If, when time is called, the match has not yet finished, the players must decide among themselves who has won the match. If no decision can be reached, the match is declared a draw. The idea is that it is to both players advantage for the match to have a clear result as otherwise they receive no points. How the players decide is up to them, be it most characters destroyed, a coin toss, or the fact that one player has one region and the other has four (when you run out of regions, you lose).
This also sounds a fair and reasonable system to me, though I know quite a few players that would literally go to war over the details of who was the stronger player. I wonder what you lot think about this, or if anyone has other clever ideas to deal with this important aspect of tournaments.
