[Player Management] One Dice Too Many

One Dice Too Many
from UDE's Player Management Forums

This recently came up in a WoW Minis tournament I was playing in, and I really wasn't sure exactly how to resolve the issue.

Suppose that a player is making an attack roll, and accidentally grabs too many dice and throws them (i.e. the attack has a power of 4, but the player rolls 5). The opponent immediately points out the mistake, but the die has already been cast... no pun intended. Now, some of the options presented were:

1) Have the player completely re-do the roll with the correct number of dice.
2) Have the defender choose which die is to be taken out (likely to choose any crit result, or in the case of none present any success).

The first option seems to be the likely way to go, despite one player being unhappy in the end regardless (unless by some coincidence the player rolls the same number of successes and a possible applicable crit). Or is there another option available that no one thought of or at least brought up?
