More Machine Than Man
Should the section on Required Tournament Materials be changed
from UDE's Player Management Forums
Currently the section reads as follows
1. Required Tournament Materials

Players must bring the following materials to a tournament:

For Constructed tournaments, a deck that follows all deck construction rules.
A pen or pencil, to fill out match result slips.
A method to track game scores and status. This can be a calculator, life counter, pen and paper, or another reliable tracking method.
A copy of his or her personal nine-digit UDE membership number.
Identification to present when registering for a tournament.
The main focus of this discussion is the following section.
A method to track game scores and status. This can be a calculator, life counter, pen and paper, or another reliable tracking method.
Currently the rules allow several different options for tracking life. However two of the options don't seem to quite so reliable in practice.
- Calculator
- Life Counter
That's not saying that paper and pen are without faults, but it's alot easier to mess with your life total on a calculator or life counter. Addiontionally these devices can power off losing what was currently entered.
So now we come to the debate, which resolves around two main issues.
- Should calculators, life counters, etc be disallowed in tournaments, with pen and paper being the only legal tracking method.
- Should there be penalties in place (most likely warnings) for when one or both players do not track their life.
Like I said before, pen and paper isn't perfect. But it's seems like in the past I've had more trouble with calculators then pen and paper. Now you could argue, as judges we should be able to work through the game and establish lifepoints, but this can a few moments up to several minutes depending on the situation, which wastes valuble tournament time.
But what's the point in a debate if I do all the talking, so lets see what you have to say. Do keep in mind, there is no garuntee that whatever is discussed here, will be transfered over to the official rules. However I do feel it is important to discuss issues like this to provide feedback from use valuble judges.
