Abyss Soldier CMC-EN001

Abyss Soldier
Effect Monster (Aqua / WATER / 4 Stars / ATK 1800 / DEF 1300)

Discard 1 WATER monster from your hand to the Graveyard. Return 1 card on the field to the owner's hand. You can only use this effect once per turn, during your Main Phase.

"¢ [Re: Elemental Mistress Doriado] The effect of "Elemental Mistress Doriado" is even applied while she's in your hand or Graveyard. So you can discard her for the effect of "Abyss Soldier". Or remove her from play while in the Graveyard to Special Summon "Gigantes".

To one of my personal favorite cards, Abyss Soldier. This card screams Sinister Serpent + Premature Burial abuse. It's also a 1800 beatstick, if nothing more, and it's 1300 DEF is Tsuku-proof.

Now this card comboes obviously with 1 card, Sinister Serpent. Free abuse is always a good thing. Also, combo this with D. D. Designator for some cheap advantage, or reuse Premature Burial again and again. It can also remove a non-chainable threat like Mirror Force, or prevent that pesky Royal Decree from jamming you up, for this turn.

This card has a lot going for it. 1800 ATK allows it to take down most 4-star monsters that see play nowadays, and 1300 DEF means Tsukuyomi can't kill it. It's also usually a good late game draw, because by then you usually have Sinister Serpent recurring itself.

This card has very little going against, besides the fact that it isn't Chaos food, and it can only be used to bounce something once per turn. But this can often be advantageous with Sinister Serpent.

When playing this card, try to bait plays out of your opponent before summoning it. This will make the choice of what to bounce a little more obvious.

This card is a STAPLE in Water decks, and is really fun to tech into any deck. Trust me, I tried it. It was fun.

Advanced: 4/5 Control is even greater here.
Traditional: 3/5 Mass removal overshadows this.

Abyss Soldier. I have a few words for this card straight out: Staple. For. Water. Decks. If you run a water deck, you need Abyss Soldier, flat out, plain and simple. You could use him in a non-water deck too, but really, bouncing your opponent's cards, not just monsters, but cards, is a very useful effect. If Night Assailant was a WATER monster, this card would be in every deck in the world, just because the effect is that good, IMO. However, this card is best for WATER decks, since, of course, its effect needs WATER monsters for its effect.

The best combos with Abyss Soldier are discarding Sinister Serpent, so that you don't lost too much hand advantage, and using it in conjunction with cards like Amazoness Chain Master, D. D. Designator, and the like. Also, some may be going out on a ledge and using Enervating Mist with it, just to make your opponent lose cards quicker.

Abyss Soldier gives you fantastic field advantage, but can make you lose hand advantage. If you somehow manage to get enough cards into your opponent's hand where they have to discard, then that's good. Again, Enervating Mist makes this happen quicker.

As aforementioned, Abyss Soldier can make you lose hand advantage, depending on what you discard. And also, sometimes you may not have the monsters to discard.

Of course, when using Abyss Soldier, you must use Sinister Serpent. It's obviously the best card to use in conjunction with it. Also, tribute monsters like Levia Dragon and Suijin can be discarded and then special summoned later without tributes. And do be careful not to return cards to your opponent's hand that will just help them, like a Call of the Haunted that's just there or Swords of Revealing Light, since they can activate it again for a whole other bout.

The best decks for Abyss Soldier are obviously WATER decks, but I guess you could use him in a regular deck. You know, with Sinister Serpent and Tribe-Infecting Virus. And, of course, another Abyss Soldier, if need be.

Ratings:
Advanced (Water Deck): 4/5. The only downside is the hand disadvantage.
Traditional (Water Deck): 3.5/5. A bit worse because hand advantage=everything here. Though, you do have Confiscation and Sentry.
Limited: --/5.
Sealed: --/5.

Excellent job guys. I never really considered Abyss Soldier outside of a WATER deck (where I feel 2 are necessary), but there are definitely options and good reasons to do it.

Keep up the good work.
