Brain Control - TLM-EN038

Brain Control
Normal Spell
"Pay 800 Life Points. Select 1 face-up monster on your opponent's side of the field. Take control of the selected card until the End Phase of the turn this card is activated."

If the monster targeted by "Brain Control" is flipped face-down later in the turn, it is still returned back to the original controller in the End Phase.

You cannot activate "Brain Control" if you already have 5 monsters on your side of the field.

[Re: Blindly Loyal Goblin] Your opponent cannot use "Change of Heart", "Snatch Steal", or "Brain Control" on your face-up "Blindly Loyal Goblin".

Let's keep New Ban List week rolling with one of the most hyped cards to come down the pike, Brain Control. Thanks in part to the anime, this card has become very, very popular.

Somehow or another, this thing avoided the banned-restricted list, much to my surprise. We can still use 3 of this bad boy in our decks, but do you want to? Let's see...

Think of it as Change of Heart with a cost. You can use the stolen monster for a tribute summon, launch it with Cannon Soldier, clear your opponent's field for a direct attack, Morph it, you get the idea. It's good. It has a bunch of uses, and the cost isn't that bad. You do use Premature Burial, don't you?

So why review it for New Ban List week? I'm sure it has something to do with control, which seems to be a popular theme in this new format. Brain Control was useful before, it still is now. It wasn't restricted, nor were other cards that allow you to use an opponent's monster like Snatch Steal, The Charmers, and to a lesser extent Mind Control.

It's not a staple, but it's pretty close. It's necessary in control decks, decks heavy on tributes, and decks with (Toon) Cannon Soldier to name just a few.

Advanced: 4/5
Traditional: 3/5 - You have Change of Heart, but only 1
Limited: 4.75/5 - It goes great with Ancient Gear Beast, Millennium Scorpion, Criosphinx and Hieracosphinx. It could also get you the win with a direct attck.

I have been considering it for a fusion based deck, mostly to deal with the local meta (i.e. lots of Cyber Dragon abuse).

Scenario: the opponent will usually summon a Cyber Dragon if he goes second, and you have either summoned or set a monster. They will then often follow it up with another monster. They blast through your defences, leaving you with nothing. You then special summon your own Cyber Dragon, Brain Control his and activate Polymerization/Fusion Gate to fusion summon Cyber Twin Dragon. An alternative would just be to not summon your own cyber, just brain his and then normal summon The Light- Hex Sealed Fusion, before using Hex's second effect to special summon Cyber Twin Dragon

Whilst I realise that the same could be done with Soul Exchange, having 3 copies of both Soul Exchange and Brain Control significantly increases the odds of pulling off the combos.

Looking at the local metagame (Des Moines Regionals especially) I saw a lot of people using Brain Control in multiples.

The one thing that makes me prefer Mind Control to this card is the ability to take face-down monsters and the no cost. Well, except the not attacking or tributing, which can be a problem.

Bias aside, Brain Control is one of the better cards we have available to us, I'd have to admit.

Nice review Jath :D.

And english chef - very nice combo. I enjoy how you're manipulating your meta :D.

it has basically the same amount of cons that Mind Control has. though Mind Control is looked the other way becuase the monster cant be tributed or be used to attack with. But that isnt a problem, because Sending to the graveyard is not tributing.

the following work really good with Mind Control

Altar for Tribute
Gift of the Martyr
Level Up!
Polymerization
Power Bond
Reversal Quiz
Transcendent Wings
Ultimate Baseball Kid

now with that said, imagine all the possibilities that you have.

in a Cyber Dragon deck with polymers and so forth and you know your opponent is using the same, wouldnt Mind Controll be better than Brain Control?

1, you dont have to fear Book of Moon
2, It costs nothing.

so preaty much they both have their ups and downs, but it seems people dont tend to look for cards like the rest of us in order to find good ways to use cards.

say an Ultimate Baseball Kid / DNA Transplant deck can abuse the 3x Mind Controls to do deal damage everyturn and pump up the Ultimate Baseball Kid.

now that is hot.
