Chainsaw Insect SOI-EN021

Welcome to another card review by DrZero.

For now, I'll rate this most interesting insect card yet.

Let's see it's stuff

Insect Earth 4 Star
2400ATK 0 DEF
Effect

If this card battles a monster, your opponent draws 1 card at the end of the Damage Step.

Now, you can tell, the effect is BAD! Your foe DRAWS a card, not you, your foe. This effect is so bad that it's even badder then Goblin Attack Force. Those Goblins keep switching themselves to 0DEF mode after they attack, (meaning they'll usually die next turn) but this is more insane. You destroy there monster card, but your foe draws so the overall result is no card advantage AT ALL.

So what's so great about this card? it's actually the stat, not the effect. A 2400ATK STAT that is, and it's a lvl 4! Meaning, NO TRIBUTES! A 2400ATK non-tribute monster is a HUGE JUMP from a 2200-2300ATK non-tribute monster. Cause 2400ATK monster means it can kill the all popular Monarch, Jinzo, etc. The highest of the lvl 5-6 monster food chain. The only "usable" lvl 5-6 monsters that's higher ATK stat then 2400 is just Dark Ruler Ha Des and The End of Anubis, that's it. Chainsaw Insect is pretty much garenteed to kill all other monsters then those two except monsters that cannot be destroyed in battle like say Spirit Reapers.

And if you read the text, it only lets the foe draw a card when you battle a monster. If Chainsaw Insect attacks directly, no drawing for your foe. And 2400LP direct damage HURTS!

However, this card is far from perfect. Your foe is pretty much garenteed to draw a card when this card fights a monsters. Your foe can steal this card, suicide it on your Monarch or something, and then your foe still draws a card. Cause if Chainsaw Insect is destroyed from fighting a monster, then it becomes a graveyard effect, not on the field effect, so your foe still gets the effect. Of course this doesn't mean it'll always make your foe draw. (I would also say the same thing if this card was removed from play. Like say your foe steals your Chainsaw Insect and suicide on your DDA. I think it'll be removed from play on your side of the field, and thus the stealer of Chainsaw Insect would still draw.) If this monster is switched to defence or flipped face-down and get smacked by say MSlv2, your foe doesn't draw a card cause it died by a card effect. Same goes with stuff like Chainsaw Insect hitting Saku, it died by card effect and never really fought.

I nice idea for this card support is of course Skill Drain. That trap goes along with all those Goblin family, along with Fusilier Duel-Mode, and now this card too. Of course when Chainsaw Insect is destroyed as a result of battle, not even Skill Drain helps there cause then it's a graveyard effect.

But even with these probs, a non-tributable 2400ATK monster is hard to ignore. Cause there's ALOT of Monarch and Cyber Dragons running around and this card can be a "temporary" solution. And I say temporary cause there's no card advantage since your foe draws a card.

However, these days we're seeing alot more slow tempo decks with everybody just setting Deko and Merchants for flip flop control Avarice stuff. Chainsaw Insect is possible the WORST CHOICE EVER to use against those flip flop control. Those decks were MEANT for high hand count management, yeah, with Chainsaw Insect smacking Deko and Merchant set monsters, you literally gave up the match in a silver platter.

Final thought, unless it's a Skill Drain deck, only use Chainsaw Insect to kill high ATK monsters, usually tribute monsters. And never EVER use Chainsaw Insect to hit a face-down defense monster. The only defense monster Chainsaw Insect "maybe" should kill are GK Spy... and that's a MAYBE. (Cause Cyber Dragon can take those out just fine.) And try to go for direct attacks with Chainsaw Insect. (Like say support it with MSlv2 on the side, so that MSlv2 can hit all those set face-down monsters while Chainsaw takes out the face-up monsters or direct attacks.)

A 7 out of 10

I WOULD have given it an 8 in normal cases, but for now, I don't think this card is good in metagame so far. Mainly cause the current gameplay of YGO is slow-as-heck flip-flop control, which Chainsaw Insect is possible the worst card ever to fight against. It's like shooting your own foot with a gun when you use Chainsaw Insect in those decks.

I've been having a lot of fun playtesting 2 copies of this guy. With double Smashing Grounds and Sakuretsu Armors, and Dark Hole/Mirror Force, it hasn't been hard to get this guy at least 1 direct attack a game.

Another interesting way to play has been Creature Swap. Swap Chainsaw Insect to your opponent, run your elemental searchers into him and pull them all out, and keep suiciding. Deck thinning to the extreme at the cost of a couple thousand Life Points. Not real practical, but it works.

Chainsaw Insect is a nice finisher, and if nothing else he's an offensive wall. It's not for every deck, but he's a nice little surprise in most cases.

That same combo with the elemental searchers can be used by the opponent also, I would not keep this card in the main deck for more than 1 game.

This card is a horrible card. I had some YVD opponent overextend on me and hit me directly and killed me in 2 turns with his Insects. It's that bad!!!

Anyways, besides that, the only time I'd ever use CI is in a Skill Drain Deck, and even then, I'd be very cautious, since sometimes, you may have to take out a big monster with CI and a Dust Tornado or MST can kill the Drain and turn the tide of the game for the opponent. Always go for direct.

I do agree that Chainsaw Insect is either direct attack or suicide against 2400ATK tribute monsters. Other then that, giving your foe cards is just too much of a disadvantage.

Oh man, searchers. You literally give them 3 free cards!

And stuff like Scapegoat REALLY annoys this card. (What, your gunna hit 4 stupid defense tokens to give them 4 cards?)

And 2400ATK wall does seem nice, better then GK Spy "stat" wise. (At least it'll pull back those Cyber Dragons)

Anyway, ALOT better then Jirai Gumo. (In comparasion of another high ATK stat insect monster that's non-tribute)

The concept is simple. You are sacrificing hand advantage for field advantage. It simply replaces the monster you destroy in battle with a card in hand...

... Cyber Dragon is better

I'm planning on updating my Fiend Exodia deck here pretty soon. While I run the Emissaries and some Metamorphosis to get the Emissaries searching fast. A Creature Swap with a Chainsaw Insect and potentially Bistro Butcher too can give me some serious search AND draw power with things 8^D I'm digging this beast!
