cost vs effect

i usually read most of the post in rules and judge's article. latel there has been quite a bit of talk about cost and effects. example sending thunder dragon to the gaveyard to search for two more is a effect, therefore u can use its effect even if removed from play by banisher or macro's. is there a specific way to tell which cards are costs to activate, or simply part of the effect? thanks

There have been several threads in the past about this very topic. Have a quick look through this section ("Rules Questions (YGO)") for one of them. I believe there was one fairly recently too. Just do a Keyword Search for "cost" and you should find something good.

1 thing to clarify.

Both Thunder Dragon and Kuriboh were errata-ed to say that they just have to be discarded (which is the cost to activate their effect). However they no longer say "discard to the graveyard". That's why it doesn't matter if Banisher or Macro Cosmos is on the field or not.
