curse of fiend

RIP Jacob KT 2/16/06
Up untill recently I thought that darkness approaches was the only card that could get a monster in face down attack position. But my lvl 2 judge friend Darrius is over my house cause we're going to a spoils 13k tommarrow and says "Alex, you were wrong, Darkness Approaches isn't the only card the gets monsters in face up attack position."

He of course shows me Curse of Fiend. Now, I checked the judge list and it states face down monsters are fliped to face up attack position (and flip effects activate).

My question is why?

Darkness Approaches
Discard 2 cards from your hand. Select 1 face-up monster and flip it face-down, but do not change its battle position.

Huh???

Anyways, Curse of Fiend, well it's just a BKSS situation, there is no real explanation. The card itself only refers to Defense to Attack and vice-versa.

Yes there is a very logical explanation. It's the general rule when any effect tries to put a face-down monster into attack position. The general rule is that it flips, and any other reason is it's ignored.

Darkness Approaches doesn't even approach the situation in the same manner (no pun intended). It flips a card face-down, and ignores the Battle Position altogether. In fact, the text specifically instructs you to disregard Battle Position. It's primary function is to affect the card's face value.

Curse of Fiend is not really in the same category, as its primary function is to affect Battle Position. The face value of the card is only affected due to game mechanics, but not because the effect specifically dictated it to.

I have a question about Curse of Fiend, is it a quickplay? Or can you actually activate this normal spell during the standby phase?

In other words, If I draw the card, I can then activate it during my same standbyphase?
