Cyber Dragon CRV-EN015

Cyber Dragon
Effect Monster (Machine / LIGHT / 5 Stars / ATK 2100 / DEF 1600)

If there is a monster on your opponent's side of the field and there are no monsters on your side of the field, you can Special Summon this card from your hand.

"¢ You can only use the effect of "Cyber Dragon" to Special Summon itself during your Main Phase.

"¢ The effect of "Cyber Dragon" does not start a chain.

"¢ You can negate the Special Summon of "Cyber Dragon" with "Royal Oppression", "Solemn Judgment", or "Horn of Heaven".

Well, well, we get to the signature card for CRV, Cyber Dragon. I like this card, but I prefer The Fiend Megacyber myself. Say what you want, The Fiend Megacyber is better in today's format. But anyway, back to Cyber Dragon.

I see comboes here. Power Bond comes to mind, as does Metamorphosis for some cool Dark Balter action. It also has Machine support, so I see Limiter Removal comboes in the making.

This card has above-par ATK, and average DEF, so it can stand up to alot. It's 5-star, but has an easy way around have to tribute for it, so it's all good there, and it's Metamorphosis-friendly. It's Light, so it's Chaos food, and it's also a nice hefty 2100 ATK beatstick.

The only thing I can see wrong with this card is that there is no way to search it, even in Traditional. That's all I see wrong with it.

When playing this card, use the opportunity to overwhelm your opponent with field presence while you have it. Or you can save Cyber Dragon and summon it right after they Mirror Force your field.

The best decks for this card are Cyber Dragon decks, OTK Cyber End Dragon decks, and Machine decks. I can see this working well in any of the 3. It's also *cringe* splashable in Chaos, so it could work there.

Advanced: 3.25/5 We have a warrior that does it better.
Traditional: 2.5/5 Monster removal owns Machines, period.
Sealed Pack: 4/5 You got lucky if you pulled this guy.
Limited: 3.5/5

Day 4 of CRV week brings to us the beginning of the Cyber Dragon series, starting with Cyber Dragon itself. I like to think of Cyber Dragon's effect as what The Fiend Megacyber's effect should be. Cyber Dragon is amazing top-deck. 2100 ATK and you can special summon it immediately as long as you have no monsters and your opponent has at least one. With Scapegoats and mass monster removal running around, this is quite easy to do. Or, if your opening hand has this and another four star and you go second, chances are, you can have pretty good field advantage early in the game. Imagine this, Marauding Captain, and another four star or lower monster in your opening hand. I like this card a lot, and I also like how it seems to be pretty flexible. You can easily throw it in anywhere as one of your tributes in any old Chaos deck, since it's LIGHT, or you can base a deck around it with its fusions.

Since I have yet to see Cyber Dragon in action, the combos I know for it are just off of the top of my head. A few that I can think of are summoning it and another monster on your opening turn, as long as your opponent went first and summoned a monster, or summoning it with its effect, then tributing it for another monster like Mobius, Jinzo, or even Airknight, if you are so inclined, just to adapt for the situation. Special Summoning it also allows you to obviously gain field advantage more easily.

When you use Cyber Dragon, you can essentially bypass the limitations of most tribute monsters. A lot of people don't run a lot of them because of top-deck, but this can actually give you an advantage when you top-deck it. If it gets destroyed when you summon it and your opponent still has another monster on their field, you can summon a second Cyber Dragon. This is definitely a big advantage of being able to get field presence of a moderately strong monster.

However, nothing comes without its disadvantages. Most of the time, your opponent may have a monster with an ATK higher than 2100 if you have no monsters, like Black Luster Soldier, Jinzo, or a Monarch, so summoning this won't do you too much good. Also, if you are being beat down but you still have monsters on the field, like Scapegoats, you can't use his effect and he essentially becomes a normal monster.

When you are using Cyber Dragon, you need to remember to be wise. Personally, I wouldn't summon it normally, as in, I'd never tribute summon it. That would be a waste of its effect, and since its effect only happens once (usually), I'd want to make good use of it. Also, keeping a monster of 4 stars or less in your hand with it might be a good idea, so that way you can summon it with its effect and then summon another monster normally to make use of, or even abuse, your summoning capabilities for the turn. And if you're using a Cyber Dragon deck, chances are, you will have them pop up together sometimes, and that can make your hand rather congested. What makes things worse is that its best fusion, Cyber End Dragon, needs all three of them to fuse into it, since Metamorphosis with a 10-star is hard, Cyber-Stein is risky, and Summoner of Illusions can be too slow. This may make you feel pressured to harbor them in your hand so that they don't get destroyed and you can fuse them into Cyber Twin Dragon and Cyber End Dragon. Don't feel pressured to keep them in your hand, though. It's just as dangerous as summoning them to the field with all of the Delinquent Duos, D. D. Designators, Toon Gemini Elves, and Amazoness Chain Masters floating around people's decks.

Though Cyber Dragon is flexible, in my opinion, I think its best to keep it in a Machine Deck, and, preferably, its own deck. Some people say that the Cyber Dragon deck will replace Chaos decks. I say that they will be used together in the same deck. Either way, Cyber Dragon was mainly made for its uber-fusions.

Ratings:
Advanced: 4/5. With all of the monster removal, this is an awesome effect.
Traditional: 3.8/5. Even if you can get it out, chances are that it won't stay for long. Chaos Emperor Dragon can probably get rid of it before you can summon it.
Limited: 4/5. A wonderous effect here.
Sealed: 3/5. It'll do fine in Sealed, since most of its support cards are in the set. Still, it needs some support from other sets to work well.

Good article. One thing to mention. Cyber Dragons been out long enough for people to "sort of " know that when he is summoned as the "first" monster, there may be a additional monster coming with the Normal Summon.

It's taking a chance, but I think some people would hold onto their Torrential Tribute until that moment they summon the additional monster. It's risky, but if you can get a 2 for 1, its worth it.

Addtionally, if they don't summon another monster, maybe they will next turn....

just to make sure:p
can I special summon it if my opponent has 1 monster
or if ha as any amount of monsters and i have non?
thanks
