interupting the chain

Ok, I have my own answer to this but I want to see what you all say.

I was playing a Gladiator beast deck VS a Gravekeeper + Dark Scorpion deck.

my opponent had Rite of Spirit face down, and Deck Destruction Virus (well, the one where you tribute 2000 to destroy 1500 or less) and he had Necrovally on the field. I just special summoned the G Beast with 1500 attack to destroy a spell/trap on the field, and selected necrovalley. He chained ROS to special summon Gravekeeper's Comandant. Then, when GkC was special summoned, he decided to play DDV to tribute him away, since he would be over 2000 attack because NValley was still on the field.

Can he do that? Can he interupt the chain like that? I didn't think he could. I thought the chain had to finish resolving before he could interrupt it like that, in this case, destroying Nerovalley.

Does the guy you were playing play other TCGs as well? Reason I ask is because it sounds like he's playing the chain like the major TCGs out there, where you can add links to the chain even as it's resolving. But in Yu-Gi-Oh!, once the chain is allowed to resolve, you can't add anymore effects or links to it. Even an effect that triggers mid-chain will still have to wait for the current chain to resolve.
