Kuriboh
Effect Monster (Fiend / DARK / 1 Star / ATK 300 / DEF 200)

Discard this card from your hand. Make the Battle Damage inflicted to your Life Points by 1 of your opponent's monsters 0. You can only use this effect during your opponent's Battle Phase.

Back from a mini-vacation (though from the looks of things, it appears plenty of other people kept filling in new cards so it doesn't look like we were missed all that much). This week we take another look at some lesser played Fiend cards and those that support them. First up, Kuriboh! Ok, noone plays with Kuriboh because of his stats. You play him so you can reduce any damage to you from 1 of your opponent's monster in battle to 0. Now Kuriboh won't protect your monster if that was destroyed in battle, it will just save you.

Kuriboh is a bit of an underappreciated card in that it's one of the few things that can make an Injection Fairy Lily player weep. It's also great against Machine decks that love "Limiter Remover" and heavy Trample themed decks. Because he is such a surprise card, most people will never expect it. Just remember though, his effect can only be activated a) from your hand as a discard and b) during your opponent's turn (so no "oops I'm about to take a lot of damage from my attack, quick drop Kuriboh!").

As a Dark and a Fiend, Kuriboh will work nicely in a Chaos deck and a Necrofear deck (gotta do something with him once he's in the Graveyard). 1 or 2 in your deck should provide a good surprise when your opponent thinks he has you.

I've used this little gem in my Fiend deck with Newdoria to suicide into larger monsters. With this combination you can charge head first into BLS with Newdoria, discard Kuriboh, put BLS in the graveyard, and have two Fiend monsters in your own graveyard waiting for Dark Necrofear.

Of course searching for him when your opponent attacks Sangan preventing the damage from your opponent's second monster attack is always a stock move as well.

By gosh by gumby....you're right! No wonder I only got away with it once....I've only used my Fiend deck once since I made it! <laffin at myself> Every once in a while I have selective reading....it's kind of like the skill of selective hearing they teach you at husband school <smirk>

Thanks for the correction!

Don't let that get ya down John! Even the most devouted fiendish duelists make that mistake on occasion.

The other thing to note about Kuriboh is that its effect is virtually impossible to stop. Divine Wrath, and I believe End of Anubis are the only ones that can prevent it once it has been activated. There are also the hand discard options, but again, it serves a dual purpose of providing excellent Necrofood 8^D

...and if I remember correctly, you can make an extra fiendish twist on this card by running them in threes with a Forced Requisiton. Granted the initial activation of Forced Req. is a little tricky to pull off, but after that, combo Kuriboh and Night Assailant will have your opponent thinning their hand as well as not doing damage.

I remember laughing at Desestu summoning BLS when I had an open field...

though he did PWN me with Breaker.

It's a great card to keep for emergencies, though I wonder if Waboku isn't a better option.

Kuriboh is just the perfect little number against monsters who like to attack twice. ( Mataza the Zapperor Twin Swords of Flashing Light-Trice)

*Bursts Bubble* Sorry, but it will only stop damage from 1 attack by a monster, even if that monster can attack twice or more times. There was a thread on this somewhere....

I remember that... I remember doing the extra summons JUST IN CASE you has a Kuriboh in hand :) Lucky me.

And overall, I can see Waboku and Threatening Roar being more effective. However, because he activates in the damage step, he is the only thing that can totally negate IL (watch them waste 2000) and Machines where the player waits to drop Limiter Remover (esp in the new set with the 2 Gear Golems. Neither let you activate S/T cards while attacking, and Ancient Gear Golem having Trample no less). Kuriboh will be your best friend in those cases. Or if you're lucky to have a couple in hand and your opponent trunades the field and suddenly pulls out Armed Samurai - Ben Kei. Watch him start wasting attacks :)

Of course to open the can of worms... is Kuriboh a Graveyard effect (and as such "Anubisable")? Extrapolating Exiled Force I would think it is, but also remember that Kuriboh need not be discarded to the Graveyard for him to get the effect, just simply discarded so even if it is Anubisable, if Banisher of the Light is on the field at the same time, it would be discarded to "removed from play". (Same with Thunder Dragon, though that card needs an errata since it still talks about discarded to the graveyard though the ruling is identical). Good mailing list question though.

To my knowledge, Kuriboh is Anubisable since it activates in the graveyard, but also only has to be discarded from the hand, it doesn't matter where it goes, which is why Banisher of the Light helps that out. I'll have to remember that tidbit when I pull out my Left Eye Deck and get some more Gren Maju fuel going 8^D
