Will game for food
I didn't really read any of the posts here so this may not fit with the conversation, but just off the title I figured I'd post this.
I've found that playtesting in some formats isn't really needed. For example, playtesting Golden Age isn't really that big of a deal. Mainly because barring anything new that comes out of the woodwork you know basically every match up in the format. But when a new format comes around like every single Modern Age, then playtesting becomes imperative and will most definitely make the difference between winning an event and losing it. If you know what to do in a match up at a PC for instance before you get there, you'll definitely have a better chance at winning against that match up.
