Banned card in advanced tournament.

Last week, I was judging my local tourney when Player A called me over and stated that Player B played a Snatch steal which is now evidently banned, I gave him a game loss and asked if he had any cards to replace it, he said he didn't.
At which point a player deemed it appropriate for them to butt in and stop me giving him a match loss and got someone to give Player B a new card to deck and take out the snatch steal.
I thought this highly inappropriate and spoke to this individual about his behaviour. He's a difficult guy, but he's not the reason why I'm posting.
I let the match continue as Player A was happy to do so, but what should I have done in this situation.
P.S.
I had a similiar situation earlier that day, Player A had 4 solar flare dragons decked and had no side deck (which would have been useless anyway), so I gave him a match loss and I believe one of my friends gave him some free cards to sort his deck. I then deck checked him. Did I do the right thing again?
