What do you do when your tournaments get TOO competitive?
from UDE's Player Management Forums

I would like to ask for some input on a current situation I'm certain others have already come across. Background: Our "little" tournament is growing, and we've started to experience some growing pains.
We have had a regular crowd of 12 to 14 duelists each Saturday, but are now starting to attract 20 to 25 players. The shop has been very accommodating and expanded our playing area, so space isn't the issue... it seems we've started to attract a much more competitive crowd.
Now, I understand that's actually a good thing, right? Have the best in the area at your shop and the entire group will learn from them. Well, while I can personally understand this angle, the kids that previously had a chance playing their edited starter decks are now quickly eliminated as expensive decks with very hard to find cards dominate the playoffs.
The shop owner has noticed we have already lost some of our initial participants, and before we lose any more, we're going to try to accommodate all of our players. We're reducing the prize payouts for the sanctioned (Saturday) event, and opening a free, non-sanctioned tournament the next day in which prize payouts "skip" the Saturday winners.
Does this solution seem fair and have others experienced this sort of evolution?
Thanks in advance!
