While this card is face-up on the field, inflict 400 points of damage to your opponent's Life Points each time you activate 1 Normal Spell Card.



Just to confirm, this card only inflicts damage when the controller of Rapid-Fire Magician activates a normal spell card correct? I had a player trying to tell me it inflicts damage when either play activates a normal spell card.

Thanks for confirming. No matter how I tried to explain this he would not listen. He tried to explain to me in grammatical terms that you is also plural. I told him I agree that you can be plural, but in this text the you is refering to only the controller of Rapid-Fire Magician so is in the singular.

Tell him cards always speak directly to their controllers, and that, when referring to both players, they will say "You and your opponent". If he still doesn't believe you, direct him to Dark Snake Syndrome, which is quite specific about wording.

Now if there is one thing that HAS been consistant in the game of Yu-Gi-Oh! it's that the use of the word "you" has only ever refered to the controller of the card. "You" in some works of literarature is plural in only some instances. A lot of works captilize it as "YOU" to designate whan a person was speaking to groups of people. Paticulary when the work of literature is a translated work and things like that are not as clear when translated.

But in Yu-Gi? That's always been standard. He must have been confused. :)

I don't believe he was confused. He is a very good player. Sometimes though he tries to exploit how a card is ruled in his favor. He goes as far as to explain how a card is ruled incorrectly to his opponent. This is why I tell everyone," if you are not sure on a ruling, always ask the judge to explain it. Do not take the word of your opponent." This is a hard one to prove, but I keep a eye on him at local events. My group of players are pretty split as far as experience level is concerned. Half just come play the local scene and the other half play alot of premier events. I do the best I can at keeping the inexperienced from being taken advantaged of.

"You" is interchangeable only when control switches, so even if you are the original owner/controller of Rapid-Fire Magician, if your opponent takes control of him with Snatch Steal, then he now becomes the "You" in the card text until he is either removed from the field, or control changes back to the original owner.

So, the "You" will always be whoever has control of him on the field, not "You" as in all players, no matter who's side of the field he is on.
