Fantasy Tenshi Dime: Chapter Five - Sphinxes in the Maze

The maze was vicious looking, from the marble walls to the glass floors. It was hard to know if you were actually stepping on something or not.

"Lets go" Chaos commanded and the proceeded forward into the deadly labyrinth with two goals: get to the end and stay alive.

"Oh look our first fork in the road... and we only just entered" Hikari stated, for as soon as you got in you could go left or right. They chose right.

"Draw your weapons just in case..." Zoomer instructed, so everyone got ready for anything. At even the echo of Chaos pulling his sword from its sheath they flinched and Hikari screamed.

"DO NOT SCARE ME LIKE THAT!!!" Hikari shouted and she practically set off an avalanche... -_-

"Let's just walk, please? I don't want to waste time" Zoomer said, impatient, so they started walking. A turn to the left and they encountered their first beast, a Dungeon Worm, which came out of nowhere... How could things travel thru marble and glass unseen?? And the scenery was not helping either, as the glass reflected the light to the marble to everyone's eyes, making it hard to fight. Zoomer put his shield up and was ready for anything Hikari collected light and charged up a projectile. Chaos was ready to slash as soon as the Worm moved. But it didn't. It just stood there stupidly. No one wanted to make any sudden movements, so they stood there ready as well. The worm was easily triple their size and no one could afford to do anything amateur. Suddenly, the worm opened up its... jaws I guess and "phoned a friend" and another worm came dashing in.

"Hisses" the worms were communicating.

"Get ready..." Zoomer said, raising his shield up higher and readying his turret for rapid fire. 'Ah' he thought, 'worms are probably weak to fire... this is good, very good'. He was ready.

'OK, if any of them move, ill do a dash-slice thru one and hope the others can handle the first worms homier...' Chaos thought, prepared.

'I have got to shoot both at the same time as soon as they move... That will most defiantly distract them... Perfect, then Chaos and Zoomer can probably kill them' Hikari pondered, ready. It was as if the worms were waiting for them to finish thinking, because they sprang their attack. One lunged (clumsily) toward Chaos, and he did his dash-slice thru it, but it only cut it a bit. The other went for the shiny shield Zoomer held, and he fired his rain of fire on both worms, while Hikari simultaneously sent out two beams to each worm. It all happened so fast, no one could really tell what was going on... Chaos ran around to the other worm and cut thru it, slicing it in half. It Disappeared, and the other was burning so badly, they knew it was dead. An AWEFUL stench erupted from it, so the company ran away as fast as possible. The smell, however, decided to follow them until the worm was only ashes.

"Eww... that was disgusting... I think I want to hurl..." Hikari said, looking green...

"Now you know I felt when the Shine Balls decided to become poets..." Zoomer retorted.

"Oh shut it, you know it was cute" Hikari replied.

"Now isn't the time to fight, we need to finish this before we die" Chaos broke them up, so they walked forward, and suddenly a sphinx popped up out of nowhere.

"Greetings, travelers. I am Yor-Dom. Pleased to meet you" the young sphinx said.

"So you're our doom huh? Ok, what's your riddle?" Chaos asked. The sphinx rolled its beady, purple eyes.

"No no no, my NAME is Y-O-R hyphen D-O-M... humans are so naive and stupid" it said, stressing the "U" sound in stupid.

"Well then since were mentally slow, I guess it would be okay if we just passed by here, see you later Yor-Dom, have a nice day!" Zoomer said and tried to squeeze his way past Yor-Dom, but it sighed and used what looked like telekinesis to push back Zoomer.

"Aipeiri-norramai (telekinesis)... yukasha..." Zoomer cursed.

"Now, now, do not curse. That is not polite" Yom said as it wagged a finger "As for your riddle... EH-HEM... What creeps on the floor and clings to its source?" Yor asked. Everyone looked confuzzled...

"Can we think through this together?" Chaos asked.

"Yes you may" Yor granted. So they huddled up and started talking.

"Spiders creep on the floor and cling to their silk, right?" Hikari presented.

"No... That wouldn't work, spiders ARE silks source. Besides, they aren't always attached to silk..." Chaos said.

"Well what about vines? They creep on the floor and cling to walls and stuff" Zoomer said.

"No, vines do not GROW from walls..." Hikari banished the thought and sat down. "This is hard...."

"Hmm.... Wait, what about... no..." Chaos said. It went on like that for a bit, with 'hey what about' and 'I think that...' but nothing seemed to work. Yor stood there, patiently and smiling. 'I'm gonna get to test out my new claws... herr heh herrr...' He thought.

"OH! Shadows!!! Shadows!" Chaos suddenly cried.

"Huh? Why?" Hikari said.

"Oh, it does make sense... Shadows creep on the floor and cling to the thing that makes them... and they never let go! You're a genius Chaos!" Zoomer said.

"Well..." He said, smiling. 'I was looking at my shadow...' he thought.

"Do you have an answer you would enjoy sharing with me?" Yor-Dom said, now simply just annoyed.

"Yes we do. Shadows." Hikari said.

"Correct... *sigh*" Yor-Dom sighed. "Proceed. Only three more sphinxes to go, btw... Herr Heh herrr"

"So there are only four riddles! That is good to know, right?" Hikari asked.

"Well, you see---" Yor started.

"Not you idiot, them" Hikari said, turning her back to him. "Do you not have a mouse to chase or something?"

"I am half human you know...-_-" Yor said.

"Not caring" Hikari said as they pressed onward.

"To answer your question, NO THATS NOT GOOD!!!" Zoomer yelled, frantic "SPHINXES ARE TERRIBLE CREATURES!!!"

"Uh, Zoomer..." Chaos said. Zoomer wasn't paying attention.

"IF WE GET THESE RIDDLES WRONG, WERE DEAD!! NOT TO MENTION ALL OF THE MONSTERS HERE!" Zoomer continued.

"ZOOMER!!!" Chaos said again, bonking him on the head with his sword hilt.

"WHAT?!" Zoomer yelled.

"Behind you... Don't move..." Chaos warned.

"Huh?" Zoomer turned a 180 to see a Wall Shadow ready to lunge at him, but Hikari blasted it with a double shot, critical hit beam. The thing exploded.

"*Blows top of hands* That was easy" Hikari winked. "Shall we move on?"

"Yeah... lets..." Zoomer said, embarrassed. They continued, winding thru the maze, turning a left, a right, a left, another left, a circle, a right, a path that went under the maze and up to... a sphinx.

"Herro. My name ish G-ohnay-oh-Toowhy. You traverersh have encountered me, sho I musht give you a riddre. OK, here goesh. What hash four legsh by dawn, two by noon, and shree by night?" G-ohnay asked. It spoke funny, as if it had trouble with human speech... It also moved... Odd...

"Oh, I've heard this before, isn't it like a dog or something?" Zoomer asked, but the next thing he knew he had a huge gash across his chest... The sphinx had only one claw on each hand.... Even more odd... "AH! That hurt! That wasn't even my---"

"Too bad human. You shourdn't 'ave shaid the wrong anshwer. Think before you shpeak neksht time. Ha. Ha. Ha" G-ohnay laughed, almost mechanically.

"I have heard it before I know..." Zoomer said to his friends, as his chest dripped fresh blood.

"Oh, let me help you" Hikari offered, and used her effect to close the wound, but it didn't fully heal. "That is better is it not? *wink*"

"Yeah thanks..." Zoomer thanked. Chaos was silent and in deep thought.

'That sphinx is a little odd too me... It doesn't seem... beastly... and it sounds and moves very differently than Yor-Dom.... i sense... ushbekathai (treachery). Well anyway, this riddle I know I have seen... and I think it might be what the sphinx definitely is not... human.' He pondered.

"Hey Chaos, didn't we hear this in school once or something? Isn't it like, human or something?" Hikari asked. Chaos was listening, but was paying more attention to how G-honey's ears didn't perk when he heard the right answer... No emotion whatsoever...

"Yeah... That's what I was thinking" Chaos replied. "Well, tell him"

"Yeah, ok. Hey, G-Ohnay! Is the answer human?" Hikari asked.

"I am not arrowed to give you any hintsh. You musht figure it out on your own." G-ohnay said.

"No, no I mean that is the answer? Right??" Hikari asked, but no sooner did she ask then did she have a large vertical gash on her arm. "AH! HEY! I TOLD YOU THE ANSWER IS A HUMAN!"

"You shourd 'ave been crearer. Yesh, the anshwer ish human. But why ish it? HA. Ha. Ha." G-ohnay replied, annoyingly.

"Because a baby walks on four in the beginning, dawn" Zoomer said.

"And the adult walks on two in the middle, noon" Hikari continued.

"Finally as an elder, he walks on three, with a cane as the third, in the end. Or night. Correct?" Chaos finished, observing every action of G-ohnay.

"Yesh, that ish right! Good job humansh. You may now prosheed, and trusht me, the other two sphinkshes are not gonna be ash nishe!" G-ohnay-oh-Toowhy concluded, letting them pass.

When they were out of earshot of G-ohnay, Chaos asked them all a question.

"Don't you think that sphinx was a little... well i dunno..." He started.

"Suspicious? Yeah. He reminds me a lot of a performer I met once while training in solitude. He was a machine that went by the name of G102Y5568. It was pretty strong, and obsessed with... sphinxes... hmm... do you think?" Zoomer said.

"No, it can not be! I mean, it is a machine, not a sphinx! Mercury would know, he is not stupid!" Hikari said.

"I don't know... Let's just go on" Chaos said. They kept moving, not encountering any monsters along the way anymore. But then they heard a severe drilling noise.

"I only know one monster that can do that.... Labyrinth Tank..." Chaos said, recalling yogi card memory. Soon enough, it came barreling down the path their way.

"Don't worry guys! Just go on! I'll take care of it, my defense is 2700 and my Reflector Shield is strong!" Zoomer said as he pulled up his shield, which hit the tank head-on. He was pushed back a bit by the impact.

"NO! ZOOMER!" Hikari screamed.

"DONT WORRY JUST MOVE! IF YOU GUYS FINISH THIS, WE ALL DO! JUST GO, I CAN DO THIS! AGH!" Zoomer commanded, and tried to push the tank back a little more. "GO!" They went on, Hikari looking back every once and a while to see Zoomer and make sure he was OK. 'Be safe' she prayed. A sphinx roared. Teleia... The huge thing landed right in front of them, spreading its wings into the air like butter on toast... (lol sorry I thought it was cool)

"My turn to interrogate you morsels, HAHAHA! My riddle is nothing to play at, so do not expect any sympathy from me!" Teleia boomed.

"Fine. Tell us" Chaos glared as the drilling noise in the background continued, followed by occasional explosions... 'Zoomer... be safe, please' Hikari thought.

"What is greater than God, more evil than the devil, the poor have it, the rich need it, and if you eat it, you will die? No time limit... HAHAHAHA!" Teleia posed.

"Let's think here... What could be greater than God? Is that possible?" Chaos asked.

"Huh? Chaos I am worried about Zoomer..." Hikari said as another explosion was heard.

"Are you gonna help me Hikari or no??" Chaos said.

"What about Zoomer??"

"What about our lives??"

"Well what about his life?"

"WHAT ABOUT THIS TASK????"

"How about you to stop wasting my time and solve this riddle... -_-" Teleia grunted.

"IM THINKING HERE!" Chaos yelled.

"-_- What happened to' take your time'?" Hikari interrogated.

"Let's just do this Hikari.... So what's greater than God????" Chaos said.

"Well nothing really... Nothing... NOTHING!! CHAOS! Nothing is greater than God, Nothing is more evil than the devil, the poor have nothing, the rich need nothing and if you eat nothing, you will die! Teleia, the answer to your riddle is Nothing.... the word nothing" Hikari solved.

"Wow, adrenaline really DOES make humans think better.... Hmm... Interesting. Good job, you were quite fast! WOW!" Teleia was cut off by a HUGE BOOM and metal gears flew everywhere. Zoomer all of a sudden came running toward them, burnt, bruised and bloody.

"I'm back... *smile*" He growled and winked.

"ZOOMER YOURE OK!!" Hikari ran over and gave him a hug. "Yay! Well we solved the riddle, and we can pass thru now!"

"Sorry to break your teary reunion, but you may go thru now. The exit is near. Go young travelers" Teleia said, and they thanked her and kept going. No sooner did they finish did Andro Sphinx landed in front of them.

"HA! NOW IS MY TURN!" Andro yelled "My sister's riddle may have been easy, but mine shall be difficult!"

"Tell it to us then" Hikari dared.

"Hmm hmm... Fine. A man wakes up in the morning and takes a shower as his wife makes breakfast. He comes downstairs, eats, gathers his things, and leaves for work. Halfway there, he hears a single word that makes him turn back home and kill his wife. What was the word the man heard and where did he hear it?" Andro riddled.

Chaos started to guess out loud, which was a mistake. "One word? Kill maybe?" Andro Sphinx slashed with no mercy. "OUCH!" A HUGE gash was all across his chest, another on his stomach and another on his face, spanning from ear to ear. Blood spilled out, and fast.

"Oh no!! Chaos, are you okay??" Hikari asked bluntly.

"-_-"¦ No, Hikari, the profuse bleeding means that he's perfectly fine" Zoomer retorted.

"Oh shut it. I do not see you trying to help. HEALING MAGIC!" Hikari cast a spell to try to heal him, but she only made the bleeding stop. He still had the cuts and if he moved his mouth the wounds would all open and bleed freely again. One was out....

"˜Oh no... We need to solve this and fast' Zoomer thought. He used light to draw a scenario of the situation. "OK, let's think.... Hikari? HIKARI!!" she was busy tending to Chaos' wounds.

"I am sorry Zoomer, but look! He is in so much pain! Look at him! His cuts are ten times worse than ours!" Hikari pleaded.

"Ok, I think I've got it anyway. Andro, is it that he called his house--- Whoa! Ouch!!" Zoomer started, but got a fresh new gash across his face diagonally, and Hikari healed it, sort of.... It was her turn to finish what her friends started.

"˜Oh no, oh no, oh no, oh no, oh no"¦..' Hikari thought, grabbing her head and running around in circles.

"Little girl" Andro Sphinx laughed, "pacing around in circles is not going to help you answer this"¦"

"THIS IS HOW I THINK!" Hikari yelled out. Andro looked tempted to place one right on her face.

"˜I am so totally screwed"¦' Hikari thought. "˜Think"¦ let us see here"¦ He heard a word"¦ Hey! I rhymed! Tee-hee! AH! Off subject! Okay, okay"¦ So he heard a"¦. word"¦ tee hee"¦ That made him kill his wife? How sadistic and morbid! And sexist! Not all wives have to prepare breakfast! Anyway"¦ Maybe the radio? I will ask"¦' She looked over at Andro.

"Yes?" He asked, smirking. Oh how Hikari wanted to chop off his head.

"Can I ask a question?" She asked, "cutely".

"Hmm"¦ I do not see why not"¦. Go ahead" Andro Sphinx replied most sincerely.

"Kay. So did he use the radio at all?" Hikari asked.

"˜Humans"¦.' Andro Sphinx thought. "Yes, he did indeed"

"Okay, thanks" She thanked and went back to thinking, or whatever you want to call it.

"˜Hmm"¦ Maybe the radio announcer called his house"¦ Yeah! I GOT IT!' Hikari yelled in her head.

"I think I have the answer"

"For your own sake, you better hope that you do"

She resisted her urge to attack. Through gritted teeth, she said "Did the radio station he was listening to call his house and a man picked up the phone, not his wife?" She asked, knowing that she had to be right. Andro Sphinx gasped and looked like someone just told him that Playsphinxgirl was just taken off the shelves.

"Y-yes"¦ That is indeed correct"¦ Good job"¦? Hmph"¦ On the next road, turn left at the fork and continue the road to the end. Good bye" He growled, disappointed, for his blood thirsty hands wanted more... Oh well. Chaos and Zoomer looked as surprised as Andro Sphinx did when Hikari guessed right. They got up and took Andro's advice, following the maze to a blue-tinted marble-like staircase which they walked up and saw Mercury.

"Nice Job... Here, let us go outside to the fountain. We shall talk when you are healed" Mercury greeted, and took them outside to the fountains where everyone took a long drink. Every gulp sealed the wounds up more and more until they were all gone. Weapon damage, though, did not heal....

"You all did well. Here is my consent:" Mercury said as he created a pool of water in his hand and sprayed it on them. No, they didn't get wet... -_-

He continued: "Now the primary planets are done. You must go see Uranus next. Good luck, for his test is short, but painful. God speed" Mercury ended.

"Thanks you so much Mercury" Chaos, Hikari and Zoomer said.

"No no, use tenshi language: Ononai-toi! And then i will say, Saika-toi. ^_^" Mercury enlightened and sent them off to Uranus. (If you thought that was funny, then you're disgusting) They approached the large green building which looked as if it was spilling Egyptians Ankhs of life down the sides. A sign that Zoomer translated (Retarctoshi oonsai) to "take one" was near them. So they each took one and stuck them in their pockets. They entered the building, only to see Uranus standing there. She welcomed them.

"Saika! Welcome! I am Uranus, the Agent of Life. My task is not easy, I will tell you right now, so be prepared. It is very succinct and very exruciating. This is the test of Tolerance. The Ankhs in your pockets will prevent you from dying, but only once. Now if you think you are ready, follow me. Mercury's consent has made your attack and defense rise i can see... Good. Yes I have been watching you. Yes it is freaky. Now follow" Uranus said and led them to the room where they saw horrific things.... This was not going to be pretty...
