No. You must discard Thunder Dragon by its own effect in order to be able to search for up to 2 more copies of Thunder Dragon from your Deck and add them to your hand.
Note that Thuinder Dragon's effect differs from Night Assailant's.
Thunder Dragon: "Discard this card from your hand to the Graveyard.."
Night Assailant: "When this card is sent directly from your hand to the Graveyard..."
Thunder Dragon's effect gives him the ability to be discarded through his effect.
But Night Assailant's effect is dependant on being discarde due to another event (When this card . . .). It can't discard itself.
This is why one activates via Graceful and the other doesn't.
