Toons, direct attacks

Some toons effects state that Toon World has to be on the field and there are no toon monsters on your opponents side for them to attack directly, e.g.:

Toon Gemini Elf

others appear to only have the restriction that no toon monsters are on your opponents side in order to attack direclty, e.g.:

Toon Mermaid

Is it true that they have differing conditions or is there an errata concerning these cards?

They are just different types of toons, suchs as toons that need Toon World on the field to be summoned, and those that don't need it, etc.

The reason that all toons have the "can attack directly if toon world is out and your opponent controls no toons" is because with toon world on the field, you can kind of (and I say this loosely) ignores monsters that are not toons. So they "aren't there" to block the attack from a toon.

Actually, they don't all have that in their text and that is my question... should they or did they intend to have slightly different functionality. I'll take slither's answer.

yes, a nice thing to know. but i still dont see any reason why to use toon mermaid... shes weak and you have to pay life points for her to attack. ALSO (as all other toons) she cant attack in the same turn as she was summoned -.- nearly every deck could take her out before she becomes dangerous toon gemini elf>this in a toon deck

Toon Mermaid is a Special Summon. The drawback is that she needs Life Points to attack, she can't attack on the first turn, and she needs Toon World to be Summoned. From this, one would guess that a Special Summon is a good thing, to be balanced out by so many drawbacks.

Of course, it's not balanced. She has too many drawbacks for just being a Special Summon. But still, being a Special Summon is good. It allows you to more quickly Special Summon your Blue-Eyes Toon Dragon or Toon Dark Magician Girl, without having used up your Normal Summon (which you can use for Toon Cannon Soldier or Toon Gemini Elf).

But yes, Toon Mermaid isn't that popular in a Toon Deck, as far as I know. As you mentioned, there's just a few too many things going against her to be worth it.

After re-reading toon mermaid, the reason it doesn't say toon world needs to be on the field for her to be able to attack directly is common sense, which apparently was not noticed until now:

Toon Mermaid's Text said:
This card cannot be Normal Summoned or Set. This card can only be Special Summoned while "Toon World" is on your side of the field. You can Special Summon this monster from your hand, but Tributes are required for monsters Level 5 or more. This card cannot attack in the turn that it is Summoned. Unless you pay 500 Life Points, this monster cannot attack. When "Toon World" on the field is destroyed, this card is also destroyed. If your opponent doesn't control a Toon Monster, this card can attack your opponent's Life Points directly. If a face-up Toon Monster is on your opponent's side of the field, you must select the Toon Monster as an attack target.

One important thing that obviously got overlooked is TOON MERMAID CANNOT EXIST ON THE FIELD IF TOON WORLD IS NOT ACTIVE. Slither, your post does indicate this. Entropy, you are way, way off. There is no way toon mermaid can still attack directly if toon world is not on the field, being that you cannot have a toon mermaid on the field without a toon world.

Basically what I am saying is if you take out all the extra text, all toons DO say that you need toon world active to attack directly. The ones that can only exist with an active toon world is implied. Because you have to have toon world active ALREADY.

I activate Toon World. I Special Summon Toon Mermaid. I play Giant Trunade or Emergency Provisions SENDING Toon World either back to my hand or the Graveyard. What happens? Let's look at the ruling:

"¢ This rule applies for "Toon Mermaid", "Toon Summoned Skull", "Manga Ryu-Ran" and "Blue-Eyes Toon Dragon": If "Toon World" is returned to a player's hand, with cards such as "Giant Trunade" these Toon Monsters are not destroyed since "Toon World" was not destroyed.

So I believe that would make your statement about Toon Mermaid not being able to exist to be incorrect. And yes, the Type A and Type B Toons can attack directly without requiring Toon World on the field.

"When 'Toon World' on the field is destroyed, this card is also destroyed." would be the relavant text. If you don't destroy it, there's no reason for the Toon to go with it.
