If I were to use Monster Gate and my deck contained no monsters, then the effect of Monster Gate is negated. That I know.

Now, if I use Soul Exchange to tribute an opposing monster for Monster Gate, when there are no monsters, then the effect is negated, but the monster is still tributed, correct?

I was having issues with explaining the cost vs. effect to someone last night, so I wanted to be able to show them some confirmation from other sources.

The cost for Monster Gate is tributing a monster, so yes, you can Monster Gate their monster without revealing a Special Summonable monster, your deck will replace itself, and their monster is gone.
