Only this time, there may be no solution.

I have a PSX (PlayStation 1) and have a song saved on MTV Music Generator. Is there any way to extract the data from my song into my PC other then holding a mic up the TV speakers? Yeah, I know it's a long shot, but I worked hard on that song and would like to convert it into a music file.

Is the song stored on the memory card? If it is, I think the best thing you can do is get an RCA-mini stereo adapter and feed the audio output of the PS1 into the LINE IN of your PC. I'm sure your PC came with some kind of audio software (almost all do) that you can use to convert the input into a .WAV or .MP3 or whatever makes your boat float :D

It can certainly be done, it's just a matter of how many hoops you need to jump through.

The only way I would know is if you had a PS2, because the PS1 does not have USB ports. I have a USB memory stick and MaxDrive software disk, which allow me to transfer files saved on PSX/PS2 memory cards onto a USB memory stick and then onto my computer.

But you only have the PSX. So I don't know.......find a friend with the PS2?

At the risk of sounding stupid, what exactly does the "LINE IN" look like on my PC? I've got these jacks on the front that are obviously for a mic and a headset. But I don't know what the light blue one is for:

Sorry those aren't clearer pics. The blue one is a an arrow pointing up at a dot with sound waves emanating from the dot.

None of those are line in. You'll have to use MIC instead. It will be a challenge to get the volume correct, but I'm sure it will be OK.

What kind of Jack is LINE IN? The back of my computer is some place I rarely like to go, unless I know what I'm looking for. :D Is it a jack like these, or is like a USB port or maybe like Phone Jack?

Which connection on my PSX would I be using by the way? The A/V MULTI OUT?

The blue one might be line in after all. You're right the image isn't clear. Speakers are green, which is headphones for you. If the arrow is pointing towards the center, that's line in.

What you want to do is head over to Wal-Mart or Radio Shack and get a converter that takes the red and white RCA jacks from the PSX cable and converts them into a mini-stereo plug that goes into that blue jack. You need "female" RCA ends on the converter (approx. $5.00, if that).

Plug it all in, fire up the PSX and head into the Volume Control Panel on your PC. You should see a line in setting, and it's probably set down really low. SLOWLY make it louder and louder until you hear it through your speakers. You can use the audio software to properly level the sound (and reduce noise, etc), this is just to make sure it's working.

I can't help with the software part, though. RTM (Read the manual!)

Note: If you can't get it to work, send me what I need and I can use my PSX to transfer the music for you. I definately have a line in, I recently converted all of my dad's reel-to-reel tapes into CDs for him. My PSX has seen better days but I can coax it into life every now and again for a Bust-A-Move 2 Tournament! (I am still champion of the living room)

edit: I just looked it up, and yes, blue is indeed LINE IN. Sorry I misled you earlier. I thought that was something else :)

Well, the audio feeds in alright. Now I can't seem to adjust the Line-Up volume/quality. It plays fine when I listen to it as it's recording. But the playback recording is horrendous. It plays back a maximum volume. Yes, I've gone in and adjusted the Line-In volume settings. Even tried capturing it using three different kind of devices. But each one plays the same. Loud and staticy. Is it possibly the line in connection I got is poor? It's a Radio Shack 1/4" to 1/8" Y-Adapter.

It won't be the connection. I think the most likely thing is the output level of the PSX is too high. Line-In is supposed to be "line level", meaning no amplification.

Wait ... 1/4" to 1/8" adapter? How are you plugging the PSX into that? Shouldn't it be RCA to 1/8"? (The white and red composite outputs)

Does it look at all like any of these? I think you have the wrong adapter, and you're getting the amplified output instead of line output. (1/4" is a big headphone jack, not a line out)

Looks like the first one wit the red and white female ends. I asked seveal times for the Line-In for a PC, but this is what they kept directing me to. Plus, I couldn't find anything on my own. I probably try Radio Shack again now that I have a beter idea of what I'm looking for.

Actually, that is the right one. When you said 1/4" to 1/8", I thought you had a big stereo to mini stereo adapter. I guess I wasn't too clear about if the pictures were good or bad. They were good!

Let me hook my PSX up to the ol' PC here, and I'll let you know what to do :)

I had to run the Video line through a VCR and into a TV so I could navigate the screen. Kinda awkward, but at least I could see what I was doing. I tried looking for something with that yellow Video connections, but no luck. Would have been nice to watch the PSX on my computer screen. My wife hijacked the VCR back so she could wacth Match Point (horrible movie by the way).
