A Step Back - Understanding Hydrogeddon

In this session of "A Step Back", I will explain why "Hydrogeddon" does not get its effect when it attacks or is attacked by a monster with the same attack (such as a "Breaker the Magical Warrior" without his counter) or destroyed by a flip effect (such as "Old Vindictive Magician") but will get its effect when destroyed by a "destroyed as result of battle" effect (such as "Newdoria"). In order to understand this, one must first understand that there are different sub-steps of the damage step; here's a quick review:
1. Start of damage step
-Flip monster that is being attacked if it is face down
-Flip effects trigger

2. Damage calculation
-Calculate damage
-Apply damage (this is when a monster is considered "destroyed")

3. Flip effects
-Apply flip effects

4. Monsters are sent to the graveyard
-Monsters are sent to the graveyard
-"Destroyed and sent to the graveyard as a result of battle" effects trigger and resolve

5. End of damage step
-Certain effect will be applied here, such as "Legendary Jujitsu Master".​
The most important thing to note here is that although a monster is considered "destroyed" once damage calculation is applied it is not actually sent to the Graveyard until the 4th sub-step. So what does that mean for "Hydrogeddon"? It's simple, "Hydrogeddon" must be on the field for its effect to activate, just like any other monster; this won't be the case when "Hydrogeddon" is destroyed by another monster with 1600 attack or an "Old Vindictive Magician". Now if we look at an effect such as "Newdoria"'s, you'll notice "Newdoria" must be sent to the Grave in order to activate; since "Hydrogeddon" is in fact on the field when this happens, "Hydrogeddon" will get its effect.

thanks guys, I'll fix the article accordingly. Also, I never really read those e-mails anymore, cause when I do I always tend to read obvious stuff.
 
This is a good post, Sometimes I forget attacking a monster is a detailed affair. This is one of those game-breaking plays someone might try to make against you, and if you are not wise you may let it slide. Thanks for the info.

Is it all right to make a copy of your post and show it to others? ( giving you and others in this thread credit of course for providing the info, actually it is a longer list of credits that that, but you get the idea.)
