Quick question...


I play Heavy storm to destroy PL2's 3 M/T cards, PL2 decides to destroy 1,then 2, but activates card #3 Book of Moon on my DDWL. Can he do that?

I say no, because once I activate Heavy Storm and PL2 decides not to chain they all get destroyed. But he argures that, he was checking the cards to decide if he wanted to chain to Heavy Storm.

Who was correct?

I would say it depends on what he said. if the player said I do not chain/respond then he lost his chance but if he only begins to send the cards from the field to the grave and prior to saying anything else activated Book of Moon I would allow it because he may be seeing the cards to see which card is that Book of Moon and his sending cards only as acknowledging they are not being chained. but he would not pass his response point. for example.

player a activated Heavy Storm
player b says okay and while he is saying that and flipping/checking the cards also says but I will activate Book of Moon. that would make the timing. in my opinion

but that is just me in my meta and judges we are soft on simple things if they don't voice a no response/chain and prior to the complete resolution of a card like in my example. we generally allow it. only when it comes to he said she said do we throw the book down. helps keep people honest and civil. remember younger players are not as quick to realize/remember what they have set until they go to resolve an effect.

I would say the timing has been missed now that cards are being sent to the graveyard before he catches the Book of Moon. He should check all the cards, activate what he can, and then pick up the rest and put them in the graveyard.

I'm pretty sure that it is just sloppy play. Depending on the circumstances I might let PL2 chain Book of Moon. Little kids on the playground YES, finals at regionals NO. Although, I can't help wondering where the Heavy Storm is when PL2 is putting cards in the graveyard. If Heavy Storm is already in the graveyard, I would let PL2 chain Book of Moon even in the strictest of circumstances.

huh, that makes no sense! Anyway, any player on any sort of professional level should have realized by now to check their options and they probably already forfeited their opportunity to respond. Sorry, no tellin' that DDWL to "hit the books"

If I was playing him or even judging I would let them activate Book of Moon. Like stated earlier this is just sloppy play and at worst a warning. How many people to you see play spell cards straight to the graveyard. I see it all the time and am guilty of it on occasions. I wouldn't call something like that . This is basically the same thing.

Its actually semi-sloppy play on both players parts, the activator of heavy storm should have asked for chains, and the other player should have declared a chain before destroying cards...

Of course it makes sense. If Greg's the first one to start dumping cards into the graveyard before they're supposed to go there, why would I penalize PL2 for just following Greg's lead. Greg has established that its accepted to be sloppy to save a little time, PL2 is putting the cards in the graveyard as he's going through them to save time also. Both should be warned to get their act together.

If you don't like that explaination, how about if I just rewind to the first misplayed card, namely heavy storm, and let them continue from there.

Of course if heavy storm was played correctly then this doesn't apply, but often if one player is being sloppy so is the other.

So all in all the lesson here is that have clear communication between players, its easy to lapse into casual play when playing against people you know well. However, troubles arise when the situation, such as at a big regionals where you might not know the opponent too well...
