Chaining Traps

mikoal

Sinister Control
During Standby phase

Player A's Sacred Phoenix of Nepthys returns
Player B plays Bottemless Trap Hole on Phoenix
Player A chains Ring of Destruction to the Phoenix

can player B then chain another Bottomless traphole?
and what would the result of phoenix?

Bottomless Trap Hole has specific timing when it can be activated.

It must be activated in response to the summon.

So the last thing to happen was PlayerA activating Ring of Destruction, not the summon.

ok Strike Ninja got to that one 1 step of me.....

yea i was just wondering....
so basically the last thing that happens is the ring, and the 2ns bottomless is destroyed via phoenix's effect

Correct.

PlayerB cannot activate the 2nd Bottomless Trap Hole, as it has no legal activation at this point. So you resolve the chain like this... backwards

Step3: Ring of Destruction destroys Sacred Phoenix of Nephthys
Step2: Bottomless Trap Hole does not resolve, since there's nothing to remove
Step1: Sacred Phoenix of Nephthys destroys all S/T currently on the field

ok so....which is it??
i thought u couldnt, because the last thing that happened is ring....?

It only matters the last thing to resolve, activations of cards do not affect timing.

If activation did affect timing, the Turn-player having priority would always be able to activate a quick-play spell or trap card before the opponent could activate Bottomless Trap Hole, or mirror force.

You may chain an unlimited number of cards that respond to the same event, you could chain 3 bottomless Trap Hole, 3 trap HOles, a torrential tribute.

OKay, I'm not sure whats begin said here but you cannot chain three Bottomless Trap Holes to each other. From the FAQ on Bottomless:

This card can only be activated when the last thing that resolved in the Duel was the opponent Normal/Flip/Special Summoning a monster(s). It cannot be activated at any other time.

Hey Digital, re-read your FAQ quote again....lol...;)

The last thing to RESOLVE in the example WAS the successful Special Summoning of the "Phoenix", nothing else has resolved yet. All other events were started in a chain AFTER the Special Summon had resolved, so the timing for both "Bottomless Trap Hole"s is still correct.

Oh ok, that makes perfect sense.

We're still responding to the initial summon. Activating cards will not influence the activation of cards like Bottomless Trap Hole or Torrential Tribute., and will have correct timing.

PlayerA: Normal Summons Strike Ninja
(This is the summon that had recently resolved onto the field)
PLayerB: responds Bottomless Trap Hole
PlayerA: responds Torrential Tribute
PLayerB does not respond
PLayerA: chains Strike Ninja's effect

This is as correct?

My apoligies, Mikoal. To correct myself, I'm going to explain a bit better.

The last thing to "resolve" was the Normal Summon of Sacred Phoenix of Nephthys. Activating cards will not not infuence the timing for Trap Hole or Bottomless Trap Hole.

When cards are activated in response to the summon, say your opponent's Ring of Destruction, you have not missed the timing for Trap Hole, because the "last thing to resolve" was the Normal Summon of Sacred Phoenix of Nepthys still. So yes, your Bottomless Trap Hole has correct timing. Your still responding to the Normal Summon.

ok so for timing wise, bottomless is still correct.......

what if this happens??

Scenario 1)

player A special summons phoenix causing all M/T to be destroyed
player B responds by torrential
player A nothing
Player B plays goats

so resovling backwards
goats summoned, torrential everything??

Scenario 2)

player A special summons phoenix causing all M/T to be destroyed
player B responds by goats
player A nothing
Player B plays torrential since its still the correct timing

so resovling backwards
torrential the monster, then the goats hit the field?
