This card is only activated if sent from the field to the Graveyard. There is no way to activate this card while it is Set on the field.

The effect of "Dark Coffin" is activated in the Graveyard, so its effect is activated even if "Jinzo" is on the field, because "Jinzo" only applies to Trap Cards and Trap Card effects on the field. Also, cards like "Seven Tools of the Bandit" cannot be used against "Dark Coffin".

"Dark Coffin" activates its effect even if it is destroyed on the same turn it was Set.

If "Banisher of the Light" is in play, then "Dark Coffin" does not activate its effect when destroyed, because it is not sent to the Graveyard.

You cannot choose an effect you cannot fulfill, so if you have no cards in your hand, you cannot choose to discard for "Dark Coffin".

"Dark Coffin" activates its effect even if you destroy your own "Dark Coffin".

my question is. of darl coffin is face down in the monster zone because of magical hat effect and is attacked by the opponet's monster would the effect of dark coffin resolve. since dark coffin would be flipped face up on the field after being attacked it would not be destroyed while face down. thanks

Depends on what attacked it. If Mystic Swordsman LV2 attacked it, then you would get the effect since it was destroyed face down. If say Cyber Dragon attacked it, it would be flipped face up and you wouldn't get the effect.

Note that if it was brought out by Magical Hats and your opponent didn't attack it, since it would be destroyed face-down at the end of the Battle Phase, you would get the effect.

Brings back memories of when I was playing this and Statue of the Wicked with Magical Hats a couple years ago. If the Dark Coffin gets attacked while in the monster zone via Magical Hats' effect, and flipped face-up, it won't get its effect, but otherwise, it's good to go.
