Dark Necrofear - LON 001

Dark Necrofear, the ultimate fiend card. For stats, rulings, etc. just click the link on the name.

*knocking self out* What? Jathro, you said... Nevermind. Today, for no particular reason, we (I?) look at Dark Necrofear, THE Fiend Card. Many a powerful and tourney winning deck have been built around this card. Many decks focused on other cards just splash it in because it's so easy. Let's look at some good points of THE Fiend Card.

Amazing stats of 2200 / 2800 mean that it can kill most 4-star or lower monsters, and stand up to almost anything out there. Good ATK, truly astounding DEF. The special summon effect means you don't have to tribute and it has some swarm capacity. This also makes it one of the best topdecks you'll find. Now, you thought chaos monsters were easy to bring out? This girl needs three cards instead of two, but they are all fiends. So she is actually a lot less situational than Envoys and the Sorcerer. Plus, you don't see Envoys walking around with their own personal bag of fodder, do you? Well, Necrofear has Giant Germ by her side, which can give you three fiends ten times as fast as you can field an envoy. Set Giant Germ, they attack, next turn tribute both germs for Invader of Darkness, and here comes Necrofear. I have ended several duels with that combo.

All of that talk, and we haven't even covered her effect! When she dies (by any means) she takes a monster at the end of the turn. This can give you abnormally good field presence from just one card. Remember what I said about topdecking? She can turn the duel around with that effect. But for every good card, there is one weakness:

She can't take monsters if there's nothing to take. If your opponent plays Dark Hole, then sets a monster, she'll stay dead. If they suicide a Newdoria or 2200 ATK point monster, there's nothing left to take. However, this doesn't make her effect useless. Even if she doesn't equip to anything, she's still made your opponent uncomfortable, and forced them to set or suicide when they probably didn't want to. If you've ever played chess, you know that checking the King is good, even if he can move away, because you're still forcing the opponent into making a non-beneficial move, when they would have rather developed their position.

Oh, geez, don't tell me you want ratings too! *grumble, grumble, grumble*

Advanced: 4/5 She's just great every way you look at it
Traditional: 2/5 The absence of many Light/Fiends means she isn't splashable in a chaos deck
Sealed: 2/5 Fiends just weren't all that great in that set. Newdoria, Dark Jeroid, Giant Germ are the kinds of monsters you want to use.

Necrofear is an incredible card, but does really need a deck built around her- plenty of fiends. But then, considering that there are so many fiend with good effects (or no effects and good stats) this isnt really a problem.
And as pssvr stated- an excellent topdeck!
Combo-wise, there is always Tailor of the Fickle to move her around one she has gone to the graveyard, which can be something that the opponent might not expect.

PS OMG!!!! SOMEONE DOES ACTUALLY READ THESE THING!!!!!!

I do read them, I just dont always comment on them... if there is nothing to say, why say anything?

Anyhow, I do quite like necrofear. I once had her in an Exodia deck. Suprisingly it worked very well. With Sangan, emmisaries and both lvl 1 and 3 mimics, there was more than enough fodder, and the opponent just couldnt get past the 2800 defence with anything big enough to get through the stall... and wouldnt want to use any monster destruction cards due to the possession effect.

Fun times...

Ahh yes, the Dark Lady in the fiend monarchy is definitely a card that can give you the advantage you need mid to late game in a duel. Early game she is sometimes iffy, unless you are focusing on her more and you have a plethora of Kuribohs or Giant Germs flying. While Night Assailant used to be the primary justification for running lots of discard cost spells and traps, a Necrofear deck will also make those means justifiable.

Let's not forget the two other aspects of the Dark Lady's prowess. The first is psychological. As pssvr mentioned, people run many a deck around the Dark Lady and as soon as your opponent sees you removing fiends from your graveyard, you can see them physically slump and potentially groan in despair. Their coveted Phoenix/Horus LV6/Mobius will doon be under your control. The second is the the RFP food that instantly becomes available for Return from the Different Dimension. Sure the Dark Ruler can't be special sumoned from the gravyeard, but he sure can be used for Necrofood and then RFtDD back into the game with a pair of Goblin Kings to make a stunning Checkmate. Another interesting fact is that the Dark Lady has been known to transform itself into a Berserk Dragon as a final parting blow after being equipped to a monster and destroyed.

A couple notes to add here: Necrofear doesn't quite get special summoned by any effect. It needs to be destroyed by battle or an effect your oppoent controls. Don't expect to Cyber Jar or Dark Hole the field and have your Dark Lady come back at the end. Secondly, Konami/UDE realized how devastatingly fiendish the Dark Lady is a while back and decided to limit her power. Now, she only get one "cycle" of being destroyed and coming back as an equip card. However, that doesn't prevent her from being Call of the Haunted or Premature Burialed and starting her devastation all over again. 8^D

3 fiends does get pricey early in the game which diminishes her efficiency a smidge, but other than that. The Dark Lady excels in both potency and versatiltiy, breathing new life into those fiends that are considered "useless" once in the graveyard.

Horus LV6? Not, I'm afraid.

One more thing: You mentioned she has been known to turn into Berserk Dragon. Take a look at my deck "The Dark Ruler Shall Be Pleased..." and you'll see that sometimes, she turns inton Berserk Dragon, then he turns BACK into her, then she becomes him AGAIN. And for the record, yes, I DO pull that off. Devastating.

I believe Dillie-O meant to refer to Horus the Black Flame Dragon L.8, not L.6.

What he is talking about, for those unaware, is that Necrofear's effect activates as a monster effect. Horus cannot negate the activation at that point, so when Necrofear becomes an Equip Spell card, Horus is yours.

pssvr, I know the idea you are talking about with Berserk Dragon. It is fun. Personally I prefer the remove from play angle. With it I can suicide 3 Germs and bring out a Necrofear; following turn activate Return from the Different Dimension/Dimension Fusion and repeat the process.*

*technically, it could be done once more to get 3 Necrofear out, one after the other, but I have never had the proper card set up to do that.
