figuring out Effect types

One of the biggest problems I have with the game is trying to figure out what cards are what.

And by that I mean, how can you tell if a card effect is a "Multi-Trigger" "Trigger" or some other type of effect? What are the key words you're looking for?

And for instance, with Strike Ninja, you can use his effect on either players turn. But how do you know ~when~ you can activate his effect? Or what kind of a spell speed his effect is?

Is his Spell Speed 2, simply because of the fact you can activate it on the opponent's turn? Can you use it when the opponent's monster attacks him? Can you use it to chain against spells and traps used on him, as long as the traps are not spell speed 3?

I have my own ideas when it comes to Strike Ninja, but I want to get someone else to verify it, because it's a card I want to use, but hesitate simply because I am not certain.

It's kinda hard to fingure out sometimes, but generally you can logic it out by thinking about how the effect works.

Strike Ninja is a Multi-Trigger effect, since you can activate it during your opponent's turn. You can activate it at any time, since there's no restriction on when you can activate it (i.e. something like "When XXX happens, you can remove this...").

Well, other than the Damage Step, since Strike Ninja's effect doesn't modify ATK/DEF, isn't a Counter Trap, and doesn't have a ruling saying that you can.

When in doubt, you can always check the rulings:
"¢ You cannot activate "Strike Ninja"'s effect during the Damage Step.
"¢ "Strike Ninja" is a Multi-Trigger effect so you can chain it to another Spell Speed 1 or 2 effect and can activate it outside your Main Phases, even during your opponent's turn (but not during the Damage Step).

If you've purchased any of the latest Structure Decks, they've all come with Version 6.0 of the Rulebook.

Starting on Page 11 of said rulebook, you'll find some very nice descriptions of how to tell what monster has what kind of effect. They even give you examples of the card text to look for.

If you don't have a rulebook, then you can download it from here: http://entertainment.upperdeck.com/yugioh/en/gameplay/rulebook/rulebook_v06_EN.pdf

Thanks a lot, the new rulebook really helps out. I wonder when they'll start putting in the rules for the "Second Summon" that's coming up for Tactical Evolution.

Thanks again for all this information, it really cleared things up.
