GenCon 2006 Experience

Day 1

So my friends (Josh Hansen, Simon Choy, and Jonathan Hau) and I planned this trip several months ago. We had decided to make the 6 hour drive down to Anaheim to play in Gen Con and the SJC. For what seemed like eternity, it was the longest wait in anticipation of the biggest trip we'd make together this year.

We decided to leave on Friday night at around 7pm and arrive at So Cal early Saturday morning. It was finally Friday morning and I could not concentrate in class. When the professor was lecturing, my eyes were always at the clock, and when I was supposed to follow a protocol under the laminar flow hood (it's a fluorescent microscopy lec/lab course) I almost screwed up big time. Needless to say, my lab partner was pretty pissed at me. I felt really bad I almost let her down that day. The 3 part experiment wasn't going too well ever since Monday and she was especially mad because she wasn't there that day either. I guess I somehow could not over react and jump up and down in joy because it was finally THE Friday we'd leave for Gen Con, and yet, my mind was already on a different plane.

So"¦after apologizing a million times to my lab partner, I watched some anime, played the only game I play when I'm nervously waiting for something (SFA3) and finally, Jon arrives past 5 at my place. We go to his place, I play Fifa 2005 on the XBOX. I load up the saved game (playing as Arsenal in the Premier League "“ currently 1st). I beat an average team 1-0 and then face off Man U. They take the lead early in the first half and I fight back but let another slip by in the 2nd half. I score a consolation goal and Jon's packed up and ready to go. Naturally, I don't save (first time I've done that "“ honest!) and we go to pick up Josh.

About an hour later, we're at Simon's place and we get his stuff and hit the road. The ride down was great. We shared jokes, told stories, listened to the radio etc. We had dinner at this diner (Red Robbins?), similar to Denny's. Our orders were screwed up several times and they still charged us full. We didn't make a big deal out of it and continued on to So Cal.

It's past midnight, we check into our hotel and we unpack and start playing. Simon wants me to convert to his Hydro deck, but I don't buy it. I'm running a Warrior deck with some tech. I make some changes and continue playtesting. Josh is running 3 Zaborgs, and in one game, I Confiscation-ed him having all 3 and Pot. Overall, we break even amongst each other, except for poor Jon. He's running "Tripping Clowns, Falling Bunnies" and since it was Simon's idea, he got destroyed by Mr. Choy too many times.

We finally get to bed at 3am and get 3-4 hours of sleep. I'm the first up, so I do all the morning stuff and wait for the others to wake up.

After breakfast is done in the hotel lobby, we go to the convention center. It's huge, and there is so much space for all the different card games and events there. I collect my FREE 4 day pass from the booth "“ Metagame special offer, and we all go to sign up for the SJC and write down decklists.

SJC doesn't start until 11am, so we wander around to the Exhibitor's Area and check out some cool things. There's lots of stuff to demo like Spoils, Pirates, WoW, and of course face off (Kevin/Justin) in a 2 on 2 Duel the Master event. The line was long so we just check things out (and I took some pics). Around 10.50, we go back to the YGO area and we are a little surprised Table Numbers aren't up. There are 5 minutes left before the SJC is supposed to begin and it was still clocking in with nearly 600 players. Then, Simon, being "The Man" is asked to help out. Apparently, the PES staff had not anticipated such a big turnout. So Simon asks us if we want to judge. We were like:

hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm"¦"¦"¦"¦"¦"¦"¦..

Eventually, after much thought, Josh and I say yes, and we leave it to Jon to take his deck to play. The 3 of us had not anticipated anything like this, so I was in Jeans and Josh was in Shorts when we had out pics taken here:

http://www.metagame.com/yugioh.aspx?tabid=33&ArticleId=7496

(2nd pic from bottom. Yes, it wasn't the best of my days in terms of appearance) Oh, and Simon's shirt is supposed to say "I Scored Last Night"

So anyways, we're the pairings/standings/match-slips/extra hands judges and Round 1 is 15 pages long (each!) worth of Master Player List and Pairings. Considering all 600+ players were ready for the Jump, it wasn't very easy to get around to the Obelisks to post the papers.

Since I wasn't a player, I can't write about the round by round experience. From a judge's perspective, I managed calls from every corner of the area (despite being assigned to a general area) and got to see the full array of what people decided to run. I saw plenty of DW, Monarchs, and of course Stein. I estimate Stein had 70% to do with winning games that day.

It took a little while to get adjusted to the names of the different judges I had to work with. I'm glad for the name tags they had so by Round 3, I could call everyone by name.

As the day turned into night, Josh, myself and Simon had already questioned ourselves many times on why we said "yes" at 11am. Sure the number of remaining players depleted to less than 250, and sure the list of pairings only took 10 pages or less, but we were so tired, especially with all the trash and crowdedness of the whole place that we were ready to just give up. But we didn't.

Simon, with the help of John Danker, who is an awesome judge/person ran the 5pm regional, while Josh and I continued to toil on through the Jump. It didn't help that in almost every round, the End of Match Procedure did not lead to the swift ending of matches. Of course, emotions were very high for the players involved and their friends. But, it doesn't help when I as a judge have to tell players to sign the match-slips multiple times before they actually signed them.

If you don't sign it, what just happened in the last 40+ minutes didn't happen.

Having judged several Nor Cal events with Cascade Games in San Jose, a lot of the Nor Cal players know me. I'm rooting for them between the rounds and it is always fun to see some of them climb up and hover around the top tables:

Little Alex Hin (Nor Cal) was at Table 2 with +2 when Justin Trias (also Nor Cal) topped a Tomato for exact game. Sai Cha (Nor Cal) was supposed to play Matt Laurents (2006 Worlds Competitor) but Matt was removed from the SJC after a deckcheck. Sai then went on to play Theeresak Poonsombat (2004 Worlds Competitor) in the Feature Match but lost on a Game 3 technicality. Billy Ho (Nor Cal) ended up with an oh so close 9th. And even though he's So Cal, Kirk Leonhardt pushed a Macrocosmos/D fissure deck to a top 8 finish.

The Jump Swiss was over, but we waited for Simon and John to finish the regional. Most of the other judges and PES staff had taken off by midnight. We took Mr. Danker to dinner and had a good time together, sharing jokes, stories and the day's experiences. Dinner was alright but the best part for me was the Strawberry Milkshake.

After dropping John off at his hotel, the 4 of us crashed at our own place. We all decided to challenge Kevin/Justin in Duel the Master and Jon built a carbon copy of Simon's Hydro deck for a team up. They played and then we all slept. Day 1 was officially over for us at 4am.

Day 2 to come up shortly.

Day 2

Day 2

I wake up and the alarm clock says 10.50. I'm like omg! We've lost half of Sunday! I decide to do my morning stuff and wait for the other 3 to wake up and see their reactions. Josh doesn't buy it, and Jon knew why the clock was 3 hours ahead. Simon almost got snagged into believing it for real.

We head to the Con at 8.30 and we wait outside the Exhibitor's Area. There was a long line for the first 50 to get a WoW playmat, but the 4 of us enter from the back entrance when it opens. We went straight for the Duel the Master and the 4 of us were the first people there.

Simon/Jon use their twin Hydro decks to face off against the Dynamic Dark World R&D Duo of Kevin Tewart and Justin Reilly.

The rules are simple: Both players in a team sit side by side and each have their own zones. They may tribute off their partner's monsters and protect one another. Both players share the 8000LP. Both players have their own field and graveyard. No direct attacks can be made on a player until both players don't have a monster. Both players may discuss strategies with each other and see each other hands. Neither player may special summon Treeborn Frog, if there is a s/t on either of their zones. Cyber Dragon restriction is also applicable to both players.

I wanted to use a Traditional deck, but decided not to, since it wouldn't be fair. Little did I know about what their definition of "fair" really was"¦

As soon as the game begins, Jon and Simon are both in trouble. The R&D team are loaded with killer DW cards as well as Shrinks to ease their win conditions. It didn't help that our friends drew horribly, even after using Confiscation. And when Simon set both his Torrential and Force, Kevin brought out Jinzo. The game was over for them very quickly.

Josh and myself were up next. I was using my Warrior deck and he was using his triple Zaborg deck with some other tech. Kevin brought out Jinzo and for a while we were in a little bind. But we ended up swapping to get it and when they finally Smashed Jinzo, Kevin was calling it a bad machine. After all, they do tend to go haywire sometime =P

Soon after, we lost advantage due to the Card Destruction of DW monsters. At one point, we were facing 4 2300s. Thankfully, they MST'ed chainable cards such as Scapegoat and my own Dusts, which I used back on their other set cards. I had a Mirror Force set and I called my set card "garbage". I Smashed a Silver just to make it seem like I really had nothing, and then killed the rest later on with Force.

Then at one point, we had essentially got everyone to topdeck mode. They had set m/t's but never activated them against our Sangans. For 4 turns, we chipped their LPs until it was 700:900 in their favor. Kevin topped a Brron and attacked my Sangan. I had to EC it to defense and Josh went for the kill in the following turn with Sangan and DDWL! We lasted a good 20 minutes against their DW deck - a complete opposite from their game against our friends.

And so they leveled up. I'd heard rumors from players who'd played them before, but the rumors I heard weren't even close to the full extent of the insane godliness of both Justin's and Kevin's decks.

After placing a CDIP pack on the table for each of us, the Duo changed their decks. I was to start. (right side challenger always starts) Kevin goes and sets 4s/ts. He then plays Card of Demise (Draw until 5 cards in hand. 5 turns later, discard the entire hand). I'm like omg! This is broken anime stuff! To our dismay, Justin does exactly what Kevin did and in 1 turn, we were both down by over 10 cards combined. On Josh's second turn, he played Heavy Storm but Kevin discarded the Seal of Orichalcos to negate it and save both their s/ts.

It didn't help when I had a 6 card hand and Justin played a trap that discarded half my hand randomly and draw the same number from his deck. It didn't help that Kevin used a spell that could copy the effect of a spell in the graveyard and use it. And it most certainly didn't help when Justin brought out Ra while at 9000LP (we were at 8000) and used Ra's ability "“ Kevin recited the entire chant "“ to attack us for 8999 damage. We were not even close to obtaining the Champion Pack that was on the line, but we graciously shook Kevin and Justin's hands and thanked them for the awesome games we played. As a consolation, I pulled a Cyber Shield Guardna from my pack and gave it to Josh.

The rest of the day consisted of wandering around the Exhibitor's Area, demo-ing The Spoils "“ really cool game, also with cool cards and items on sale, demo-ing Quickstrike (we got Avatar mats), purchasing anime related merchandise, and picking up our judge comp.

We went to Downtown Disney for dinner and shared stories and experiences. It wasn't until around 10pm that we decided to head for home. The drive back was uneventful and it took us another 7 hours to get back and part ways. I got home at 5.30am Monday morning and haven't slept since (currently 7pm Monday night).

All in all, I had an awesome and exhaustingly fun trip to Anaheim. The highlight for me were the two games Josh and I played against the KT/JR team, and finally meeting John Danker for the first time.

Pfft. I could take Tewart with my Thunder Kid deck :rolleyes (chortle -- uh-huh -- chortle)

Great write-up -- a good read, and it sounds like you guys had a good time out there!! Next time snag one of those Card of Demises for us! LOL!

I was unfortunately unable to get pass the first game due to bad draws and them having INSANE draws. =/ Dark world lighting and MSTs all around FTW. =/

If I'm correct, seal of orichalcos is like God cards, they "exist" in YGO world, but they're not tourney legal cards even in OCG. And lol for the whole Ra Chant. Marik would be proud. BTW, how he summoned Ra, by Monster Reborn/Premature/Call or tributing 3 Scapegoat tokens?

Jusitn played a magic card that let him special summon 2 monsters from his hand. Kevin did the chant, played a magic card that allowed him to use the effect of another magic card in his grave (Smashed our only monster) and then Justin attacked for 8999 damage.

I don't know if you guys can read the post on the L3 site, but Jeff Yuschak, the HJ at SJC Anaheim was appreciative of you guys volunteering to judge at the last minute. As you were well aware, there were NOT enough judges scheduled to judge for the crowd that showed up there. You guys helped make it possible! I hoped they comped you guys well!

Now if any of you guys want to "meet me in St. Louis" and help judge the SJC in St. Louis, or the Regionals or the Sneak Preview, send me private mail!!!

I read it. Where did he mention us specifically??? He said that Ian did some head hunting??? =P I did become the poster child for judges everywhere.

Anyway, he did shake my hand and thank me for judging and finding Winston and Josh to help out. =P I felt like a Power Ranger all over again

Perhaps, I read too much into the message, but I've Head Judged events in the past (particularly the SOI Sneak Preview) where initially we were understaffed, but I was able to recruit 2 more judges at the start of the event and they were sorely needed.

I have also walked into a Regional event after it already started, just expecting to support some fellow duelists, play on the side and/or trade cards, and the next thing I know I was recruited to help judge!

I know I appreciated the last minute volunteer help when I needed it, and my PTO has certainly thanked me for last minute volunteering as well!

I helped out because I didn't want the event to go to the crappers. I've worked events that are understaffed and those are no fun at all, for both the players and the judges.

I doubt any of the players will ever realize what my guys and myself did but at least I know other judges do and that makes me a not so sad panda. =)

Julia is awesome with posters.
