Illegal activation or resolution without effect?

RIP Jacob KT 2/16/06
So if I tribute a Rescue cat for 2 Lv3 or lower beast monster from my deck and I have either one or none left... It will resolve without effect, right? It won't be considered illegally activated and return to field, correct?

On a similar note. If I have 2 Nimble momongas in the grave and my 3rd is destroyed as a result of battle... am I allowed to shuffle my deck?

What if one is in my grave, one is in my hand, and my 3rd is destroyed as a result of battle?

Rescue Cat will remain in the Graveyard. Your opponent will search your deck to verify that you do not have any applicable Level 3 or lower Beast-type monsters to Special Summon.

You may use the effect. If you choose to search your deck for a Nimble Momonga and don't find one, you must show your deck to your opponent. You may not shuffle your deck unless you search.

Well, this really is up to the Judge of the tournament.

I personally feel that an effect such as Nimble has no concept of what is on the Field, in the Hand, in the Graveyard or the Deck. So you could choose to search and shuffle your Deck no matter how many Nimbles there may or may not be in the Deck. If you choose to search and find none, you show to verify and then shuffle. This is the same for effects like Thunder Dragon as well.

I have heard of some Judges claiming what you say.

You don't have to verify for thunder dragon: its text says up to 2 thunder dragons. Therefore you can search your deck for 0 thunder dragons, add 0 thunder dragons to your hand after showing those 0 thunder dragons to your opponent. And then shuffle your deck. (no need to show the deck to your opponent)

There was a ruling on the Judge's list not too long ago that stated that even if you knew that there were no cards in your deck eligible for a particular search, that the contents of the deck were always considered "unknown" for gameplay purposes and that you could search anyway and then present it to your opponent to verify. I'll have to dig up the ruling because I can't remember what the specific card was in question. I'll edit this post when I find it.

So, in my opinion, if you have a face up Nimble on your filed, one on top of your graveyard, and one on top of your RFP pile all in plain sight, you could still search and shuffle when the Nimble on the field is destroyed in battle.

Yes, even though it was worded weirdly, my actual point was to illustrate the fact that you could activate the effect and call any number (up to 2) even if "you" knew that there were 0 Thunder Dragons in your Deck.

The effect does not "see" where the actual "Thunder Dragon" cards are, so (while it would probably not be wise) you can infact call "1" when you activate it, even if "you" know that the 2 other Thunder Dragon's are in your Graveyard already. You would then have to show and shuffle.

The end point being, that because they are Deck searches, which is an unknown Zone, you don't need to have legal cards at activation.

It was probably not the best example, as Thunder Dragon is an Ignition Effect and Nimble is a Trigger.
