IOC-018 Chaosrider Gustaph

Chaosrider Gustaph is a monster you've probably not seen much if any at all in play either tournament or casual. If you love building decks that have an imaginative flare though it's most certainly worth a second look.

For the player who is only concerned about playability in a deck they already have the bottom line is that Chaosride Gustaph can boost it's attack to 2000 each turn providing you have the spell cards in your graveyard to pay the cost. A 2000 atk isn't anything to scoff at in and of itself. With that atk power it can stand nose to nose with Berserk Gorrila. The last important factor to look at for a player who may want to incorporate
Chaosrider Gustaph into a deck they already play is that this monster is a Warrior.

Now on to more imaginative prospects for those of you who love deck building and playing something different than the run of the mill decks.

Chaosrider Gustaph is a wind monster. Why is that important? How many wind decks do you see being played? Not very many likely. With that in mind you've got a pretty safe bet to include a copy or two of Rising Air Current in your deck. With Rising Air Current Chaosrider Gustaph becomes a 1900 atk beatstick, remove 2 spell cards and Chaosrider Gustaph is now a 4 star 2500 atk powerhouse. If you're playing a wind deck Chaosrider Gustaph can be special summoned via the effect of Flying Kamakiri #1.

Now lets get imaginative. For those of you who look for stall tactics read up on D. D. Borderline.(To be reviewed in a couple of days) In short D. D. Borderline's text says, "When there are no Spell Cards in your Graveyard, neither player can conduct their Battle Phase." In your main phase 1 you can play 2 spell cards, get their effects, then follow up by activating Chaosrider Gustaph's effect to remove them from play keeping D. D. Borderline's effect active.

For those of you who like to make your removed from play area work for you consider teaming up Chaosrider Gustaph with Primal Seed and Blackluster Soldier - Envoy of the Beginning. By placing already expended spell cards or spell cards that have been sent to the graveyard (via Card Destruction, Graceful Charity, etc.) with Chaosrider Gustaph, once you have Blackluster Soldier - Envoy of the Beginning on the field and Primal Seed in your hand, you have access to every card in your removed from play area"¦.again, and again, and again. Just activate Primal Seed, select Lightning Vortex and another Primal Seed, use Lightning Vortex, now activate the Primal Seed in your hand, select Primal Seed and Nobleman of Crossout"¦etc. etc. Bazoo the Soul-Eater was reviewed yesterday. Bazoo can certainly add to this strategy as well.

What other good might come from having spell cards in your graveyard? Take a look at the spell card Chaos End. There are a great many possibilities for taking advantage of your removed from play pile. Chaosrider Gustaph and Bazoo the Soul-Eater (reviewed the day before) help you to get your cards there.

Rulings
1. You can only activate "Chaosrider Gustaph"'s effect during your Main Phase 1 or 2.

2. "Chaosrider Gustaph"'s effect does not target.

3. [Re: Necrovalley] "Necrovalley" negates costs and effects that require removing cards from the Graveyard. So "Necrovalley" WILL prevent a player from removing cards in the Graveyard from play to activate the effect of "Bazoo the Soul-Eater" or "Chaosrider Gustaph". "Necrovalley" WILL prevent a player from removing cards in the Graveyard from play to Special Summon "Dark Necrofear" or "Black Luster Soldier - Envoy of the Beginning". "Necrovalley" WILL negate card effects like "Big Burn", "Gravedigger Ghoul", "Disappear", and "Soul Release".

4. [Re: Soul Absorption] For "Chaosrider Gustapth", activate "Soul Absorption"'s effect after "Chaosrider Gustaph"'s effect resolves.

my friend used d.d.borderline tactix.
veeery anoying...
but in my experience gustaph is only good in stall decks,
you'll duel a 1000 people and never see anyone use gustaph. :(

You're probably right. In my point of view that's because there are far too many players who focus only on tournament play and disregard creativity and have the audacity to try something off the beaten path.

With the exceptions of D. D. Warrior Lady, D. D. Assialant, and perhaps D. D. Scout Plane you'll have a difficult time finding one in a hundred who has played anything else that begins with "D. D." The sad part about that is there is a whole additional facet of the game waiting to be explored but so few with the confidence in themselves and the willingness to fail a few matches that they're willing to give anything other than a "netdeck" a try if for no other reason than for fun's sake.

You'll not always see the most popular cards reviewed here. You can find out information on the most commonly played cards from anyone around your local store. Personally, what I hope to do in card reviews is introduce new possibilities or little know rulings to the community so their possibilities are expanded.

what I find odd is that, despite no one wanting to play Gustaph, I still cant find anyone who has one for trade =/

I never really thought about it until you mentioned it but you're right, as many cards as I'm blessed with I think I only have 2 myself and I haven't seen a great many of them.

I've got 2 for trade and NOBODY ever wants them...lol. They always get passed over in MY trade book....lol.

agreed on everything.
i am just trying out d.d.crazy beast!!!
goes under gravity, level limit, and with gaia power (my favorite spell)
is one...uhm...CRAZY BEAST! :D
the trouble with d.d.'s is they are all different attribute/type so it's
hard to blend them in one cool d.d. deck.
