OK I realize tokens can not be targeted by Tsukiyomi or Book of Moon because they can not exist face down. My questions are can they legally be targeted by Monster Recovery, Back to Square One or any other card that returns a monster to the owners hand? I would say no because Tokens can not exist in your hand or in your deck. Any other thoughts?

Yes they can. The would just cease to exist once they leave from the field. Check Penguin Soldier's ruling.
Token have no face-down position, this is the only reaon they cannot be turned face-down. But they are still subject to all the laws and mechanics that other monsters are subject to. It's just outside of the field, they no longer exist.
