Lava Golem v. Last Turn

Lava Golem can only be Special Summoned to your opponents side of the field via his effect.

However, if he was properly Special Summoned before being sent to the Graveyard you could "reborn" him via revival effects. But there is no way to get him out of the Deck this way.

Actually, after posting this, I noticed that the current oficial text of Lava Golem makes it a nomi monster, so it can't be Monster Reborn ed, even if it was summoned properly originally. But just for the sake of double checking, (non-nomi) cards that have special summon conditions still cannot be special summoned from the hand or deck by another card's effect, right?

Edit: I just checked the rulings, and there is a specific ruling allowing it to be special sumoned by Monster Reborn, etc. That just confuses me, so I plan to get to the bottom of this with the help of the judge list......

Lava Golem is not a Nomi Monster. A nomi must say: "This card cannot be special summoned except by..."

as opposed to "this card can only be Special Summoned by..."

Take Black Luster Soldier - Envoy of the Beginning for an example of a non-Nomi.

When the text reads "this card can only be Special Summoned by...", that only applies to the first time to Special Summon it. After that you can use Monster Reborn, Call of the Haunted and so forth to bring it back.

"This card cannot be Special Summoned except by..." on a Nomi monster means the way that it says is the only way you're ever going to Special Summon it.

Well, not exactly the first time, though. If, for example Dark Necrofear has paid the Summoning cost of removing 3 Fiends from the Grave, and the monster is returned to the hand via an effect like Compulsory Evacuation Device, then isnt the player required to pay the summoning cost again, in order to place the monster back on the field?

Same for if one of these "only" monsters gets sent to the Deck. The ability to "Reborn" these kind of monsters refers to the Graveyard and Remove From Play area.

I understand that. I simply thought that the particular phrasing of the cost referring to the "first" time summoned, only, seemed a little misleading.

Yes. If it's from the hand, then you need to follow the instructions. If it's from the Graveyard/RFG pile and it was successfully Special Summoned earlier by its own instructions, then you can then Special Summon it to the field by any available means (but not, incidentally, by its own instructions. No removing a FIRE monster from your Graveyard to bring back an Inferno that's already in your Graveyard).

I mean, you wouldn't think of Normal Summoning Relinquished from your hand after it was returned there from the field, would you? Same idea.

Oops. It would seem that I have mistaken "This card cannot be special summoned except by..." with "this card can only be Special Summoned by..."

I dunno why they would both have the starting text of "this card cannot be normal sumoned or set" on them, all this time I had misunderstood that.... darnit.

The coming clarifications on the rules cannot come soon enough....:(

I seriously doubt that the issue between Nomi monsters and Special Summoning requirement monsters will be part of that package promised by Kevin Tewart. Its a slippery subject at first, but just takes careful reading

(something Im infamous for NOT doing)

Apparently much more careful reading than I had known.

I used to think the only thing to watch for was "This card cannot be normal summoned or set. This card cannot be special summoned except by..." as opposed to "this card can only be Special Summoned by..." (without the starting text of "this card cannot be normal summoned or set")

It turns out that I was wrong, and the second (non-nomi) text is much more similar to the nomi than I had known, or am comfortable with.

aGreed. I think they are too similar, as well. However, dont forget to look at the card text for Fushioh Richie, Berserk Dragon, Dark Paladin fusion, and the XYZ Dragon Cannon fusion, too. Their summoning restrictions are each slightly different than the "This card cannot be normal summoned or set. This card cannot be special summoned except by..." text. however, each of those, IF I remember correctly, are all part of the Nomi class of monsters.

The FAQ for Fushioh Richie says:
You can use "Premature Burial" or "Call of the Haunted" to Special Summon "Fushioh Richie" from your Graveyard, as long as "Fushioh Richie" was Special Summoned using the proper method ("Great Dezard") previously.

As for the others your spot on, Squid. Fushioh on the other hand doesn't use the "cannot" or "except"

Im glad I underlined "IF" in my previous statement, lol.

*sigh* I really should make a deck with Richie. I traded away an unlimited Mage Power for it and Dezard, 1st editions. its..just..too..cool!
