First, I don't think you can summon the monster in defense position. I am pretty sure it has to be face up attack. But here is the UDE ruling, regarding flipping f/d.

If the monster Special Summoned by this card's effect is flipped face-down, then the restrictions of "Level Modulation" are no longer applied. If you flip it face-up again, it can attack and its effects are applied.
IMHO, I would say you have to summon f/u, but you can use Book of Moon to flip f/d and then flip summon without the restrictions from LM.

A "Summon" is from either a

Normal -->Tribute, or Regular, Card Effect
Special -->Ritual, Fusion, Card Effect, Tokens

Once the monster is positioned on the field after the special summon, whether it is by Card Text, or the absence of it, unless it specifically states otherwise, ALL monsters are summoned "face-up" in either attack or defense, again, according to the Text, or lack there of.

Once a monster is summoned, there are no Manual Movements that can be conducted by THE SUMMONING PLAYER. If the monster is taken control of by the opponent during the turn the monster was summoned, that player may now manually move the monster as they did not summon it.

If you Special Summon a monster using Level Modulation, and then use Book of Moon on it, you would have to use an effect to return it face-up.

3 Golden rules for "manual changes"

Monster cannot be manually position changed if:

1. The monster has been summoned/special summoned that turn.

2. The monster has attacked that turn.

3. The monster has "already" been manually changed that turn.

They have already performed their manual position change before Book of Moon was used. They CANNOT Flip Summon it for a 2nd time the same turn.

Also Slither, you might want to add a Fourth Rule:

Monsters cannot be manually changed by the "player" that controls the newly summoned monster, but the "opponent" may change the position, should they gain control during the turn the monster was summoned.

They are probably misreading the latest change to when a monster is changed by an effect BEFORE you manually change its position.

Also, reread my previous post as I made a edit that might be useful.

You know, your right, that should make 4 Golden Rules XD

So what would happen if my opponent had a face up monster, he attacked and I played Book of Moon it stays fac down by what you have said. Thats how I do it, but they say he can be flipped back up in the second main phase!
