Looking Ahead 7 - Calamity of the Wicked

Let me say this to start. I have... nothing to say. (Bonus points to anyone who knows where that line comes from).

Calamity of the Wicked
Normal Trap
You can only activate this card when your Opponent's Monster declares an attack. Destroy all Spell and Trap cards on the Field.

Where Found: Structure Deck Marik (Reprinted in Structure Deck 13)
Likely TCG Appearance: Structure Deck 13

Just as Torrential Tribute was a Trap Card version of Dark Hole (with a timing requirement), so too do we find a Trap Card version of Heavy Storm (again, with a timing requirement). Similarly, this will make a better Mid-Game card than early or late. However, with potential that Heavy Storm and/or Mystical Space Typhoon could end up on the October 07 Ban list, this card will become a new "staple" for decks needing Mass S/T removal. Since its timing would be the same as when you would activate Mirror Force, Sakuretsu Armor, and the like, you can clear out your opponent's Monsters, Spells, and Traps in 1 Chain (you can chain this to the other cards and vice versa, but it would have to be done in the same chain).

Its biggest downside is that it is a Trap with a Timing Requirement. If MST and Heavy Storm do go away, all you will really be left with is Twister and Nobleman of Extermination as "generic" Spell Based S/T removal cards. (Yes, I am aware of others, but these 2 would go towards the top of the class.) Royal Decree and Mobius the Frost Monarch would likely see even more of an increased play making it harder to fully use Calamity of the Wicked to its fullest.

However, the effect is still strong enough to try with Heavy Storm (you'll definitely catch people off guard) and on the chance the heavy hitters do get Banned, this will be your best choice after that. Even though Structure Deck 13 has not yet been guarenteed for release in the TCG, it is very likely that we will receive it by year's end so we should be able to play with this real soon.

3 out of 5. Definitely not as overpowering as some of the other cards we've looked at so far, but with a solid removal effect, it can be splashed in successfully in many decks.
