Mystic Swordsman LV2
"If this card attacks a face-down Defense Position monster, destroy the monster immediately with this card's effect without flipping it face-up or applying damage calculation. During the End Phase of a turn that this card destroyed a monster as a result of battle, send this card to the Graveyard to Special Summon 1 "Mystic Swordsman LV4" from your hand or Deck. "

Armed Dragon LV3
During your Standby Phase, send this face-up card to the Graveyard to Special Summon 1 "Armed Dragon LV5" from your hand or Deck.

Silent Swordsman LV5
This card is unaffected by your opponent's Spell Cards. If this card successfully attacks your opponent's Life Points directly, during your next Standby Phase, send this face-up card to the Graveyard to Special Summon 1 "Silent Swordsman LV7" from your hand or Deck.

Focusing our attention on the bolded text, when the requirement is met for these cards (and others like them), do they have to activate their affect of Special Summoning the new monster? Or does the owner have the option of activating that effect? For instance, what if I don't want my Silent Swordsman LV5 to special summon Silent Swordsman LV7, but I have a free shot at my opponent's life points and I want to take it.

Thanks in advance.

No LV Monster is a mandatory Special Summon. If you fulfill the requirement, you dont have to do anything, but you will be unable to use the effect past that opportunity and will have to fulfill the requirement AGAIN should you wish to actually perform the Summon at a later time.

That being said, if you do send the monster, and dont have a LV Monster in the text of the card in your hand or deck, your opponent may search your deck to verify, so you cannot just send a LV Monster to the Graveyard and NOT search. You must "attempt" to summon the LV Monster in the card's text if possible, once you send the appropriate card.

I thought they were ignition effects and therefore optional. Thanks for confirming. And so quickly I might add.

I suppose this would have to be true cause you could run the lower LV monsters without having the higher LV one(s). Didn't think of that til just now, lol.

Actually, you can send the "LV" monsters even if you know you do not possess the next "LV".

This is similar to "Thunder Dragon". Even though you know you don't have Thunder Dragon in your deck, you can send off your last Thunder Dragon and search for 0 Thunder Dragon.

Also, you may choose whether or not you wish to Level Up!, as it is a Conditional Trigger.

What I was saying was that you can still send a LV Monster, but even if you know you dont have it in your deck, you "still" must resolve as if you were "searching" for it.

It's Optional though, as it involves a Cost.
