Masked Sorcerer - MRD-019

Today we're offering 2 card reviews. But that's because I didn't get around to it yesterday, so I apologize.

Masked Sorcerer
Effect Monster - DARK/Spellcaster
4-star
ATK: 900, DEF: 1400
"When this card inflicts Battle Damage to your opponent's Life Points, draw 1 card from your Deck."

The effect of "Masked Sorcerer" includes Battle Damage caused when it is attacked in Defense Position by a monster with ATK lower than "Masked Sorcerer"'s DEF.

Masked Sorcerer has mediocre stats, and an averagely supported type and sub-type. He, of course, has the effect of allowing you to draw or else we wouldn't be mentioning him this week. The effect triggers when your opponent takes battle damage because of him, either offensively or defensively.

Nice effect, but because of the mediocre stats it won't be that useful. There isn't much you're gonna kill in battle with only 900 attack, so chances are that will only be helping with a direct attack. The 1400 DEF will stand up to some weak monsters, but again it won't be used that often.

You could maybe try it with Messenger of Peace, but it's 4-star status sadly doesn't give you much flexibility with Gravity Bind and Level Limit - Area B, though LL-AB could force your opponent into attacking this guy while in DEF with something weaker. If you're gonna use it in a deck, may I suggest this guy in his Toon form, allowing you to bring it out in perhaps a more oppor"toon" time thanks to Toon Table of Contents.

Not many combos to speak of. On the plus side, at least he isn't slowed by being a flip-effect. So if you can find a way to support him and protect him, by all means play him. Otherwise, there are other "draw" monsters that are better choices.

Advanced: 2/5
Traditional: 1/5
Limited: 2/5

Awesome artwork on the Toon version.

Speaking of the Toon version, I think it's much better because:

It can attack directly.

That's the exact thing that it needed - the ability to attack directly.
