ok i have a dumb question about messenger of peace it says on the card it says you must pay but i always thought that it was a choice

You must pay in order to keep the effect active, but it's optional as to whether or not you want to keep the effect active. So if you don't, you don't pay and the card is destroyed.

Maintenance costs are ALWAYS optional, except the effect text reads something else (e. g. Archfiends -> the line: 'this is NOT optional')!
