Just got this e-mail from Kevin T.

Dear Judges,

Some of you may have heard about the upcoming Champion Packs. I want all of you to have the info in this email, because a lot of you judge tournaments at stores where Tournament Packs are currently given away as prizes, so this will affect you.

We've been talking to a lot of judges, players, and stores about what they'd like to see regarding tournament prizes. The Champion Packs are the result. Most people said they wanted tournament-level cards to ramp up their tourney decks. They also wanted foil variants of some of the most popular cards that have never been available as a foil. (And of course if we sprinkle in a few new cards, that makes everyone happy.)

The Champion Packs will be coming out later this year. The cards in the Champion Pack were pulled from some of the top decks we've seen at tournaments lately. This includes foil (Super-Rare) versions of some popular cards like Book of Moon and Night Assailant. The first Champion Pack also includes a brand new ultra-rare card: Satellite Cannon.

Each Champion Pack has 1 rare card (or super-rare, or ultra-rare). You won't see any "all common" packs. Also, the rarity on the Champion Packs is very user-friendly. A Champion Pack ultra-rare is more than twice as easy to get as an old Tournament Pack ultra-rare.

The Tournament Packs are being retired after TP8. The Champion Packs are just better. But like the Tournament Packs, they're intended for use as prizes exclusive to tournament stores.

Finally, despite an ugly rumor you might have heard, the Champion Packs are NOT just for the U.S.A. They'll be available everywhere just like our other products.

interesting...

Everybody has liked the the foils in tournament packs, but otherwise there was nothing to special in them. So when these champion packs come out, people will get more useable cards, but they will still be foil!?

You said Sattilite Cannon will be in these packs, but will there be any other new cards.

I'm mixed on this one.

The Tournament Packs were a great way to "catch up" a little more with Japan, but 9/10 new cards were craptastical, thus defeating the purpose. I don't feel like we've caught up at all with Japan, and I doubt we ever will.

The new Champion Packs have better ratios, at least one new card (in the first set), and are all but guaranteed to be pretty darn good overall based on what we know to this point.

I think it will all depend on how much leeway UDE has with the card pool. If they can reprint any starter/structure/booster pack card without Konami's interference I think these new sets will be AWESOME. If Konami has much say in it, I forsee the idea degrading back into a typical pattern of general junk with a couple decent cards.

At least it has the FEEL like it's not going to be a set comprised solely of E-Heros and cards "as seen on Yu-Gi-Oh! GX", thus making it far cooler to me than any set we've seen since FET.

Well, I'm looking forward to these cards. Having great cards in Super Rare versions as a special-price for tournament winners sounds like a cool idea.

I won't ever get my hands on one of these cards, because I never play tournaments, but I feel happy for the players. ^^

Let's wait for a spoiler of the cards in the new packs, if the rest is crap, they won't be that good...
on the other hand... if only cards of tournament winning decks will be put into them, how do they want to keep these packs interesting for a longer time, there are only 30 cards that are used by tournament winners? xDDD

soul

i kinda like this idea but didn't the tp packs always come with more then just 1 new cards or was that just last set that did and i wanted to know if anybody knew what sattilite cannon does

Satellite Cannon
Effect Monster (Machine / LIGHT / 5 Stars / ATK 0 / DEF 0)
This monster cannot by destroyed as a result of battle by Level 7 or lower monsters. (Damage calculation is applied normally.) Increase the ATK of this monster by 1000 points during each of your End Phases. After this monster attacks, the ATK of this card becomes 0.

Most of the TP packs contained a fair number of new cards (except for TPs 3, 4 and 5, which contained 1, 0 and 2 respectively). About 8 new cards, actually, on average (ignoring the first two, which practically contained all new cards).

These new Champion Packs sound very interesting. So does this mean that no commons will be in the Champion Pack. I am also hoping that some of the starter deck cards will also be reprinted, as they should have been a long time ago. Some of the cards that I am looking forward to are:
Lord of D.
The Flute of Summoning Dragon
Ookazi
Invigoration
Waboku
Black Luster Soldier (and its Ritual Spell)
La Jinn Genie of the Mystical Lamp
and a bunch others I can't remember

No, it means that every Champion Pack will have at least 1 rare (or better) in it. There will not be any Champion Packs that contain all commons (like the TP packs can/do).

I really do doubt those cards will be included, on the simple ground that the guy from UDE says the Champion Packs will only contain cards that are in tournament-level Decks and new cards. And let's be fair here; the cards you listed aren't really used in tournaments.

And about them containing no commons... Well, I'd say wrong. Both of the examples given (Book of Moon, Night Assailant) have common versions, and it only makes sense that they'd be common again. It's just that some cards would have different rarities in the Champion Packs to the ones they've already been released as. These would be the really desirable cards, which I don't know what they'd be. Cyber Dragon, probably. Make him an Ultra Rare or something.

They did reprint these Starter Decks (Yugi and Kaiba) as Evolution. Are you saing that you need these? 'Cause I can get the Evolutions at 50% off at my local CVS store. Or do you mean you are looking for them in hollow?

FYI, Metamorphosis was mentioned as a new foil the first champion pack by the Shonen Jump NewsFlash today. In case you care.

This is also the place to get brand new foil versions of some of your favorite cards, like "Book of Moon" and "Metamorphosis."

What I wouldn't be surprised to see, and think would be appropriate, would be Solemn Judgment in the Champion's packs. It hasn't been reprinted since it's original release in MRD and it was difficult to get a hold of then. We're seeing it in side decks and even on occasion in main decks these days.

eh? What about DB2-EN073? Super Rare? Got a bunch of 'em myself ...

:D

I'd like to see Prohibition, just to find out if anyone else would play it besides me all of a sudden!

WOAH! We're getting Satellite Cannon! That's pretty much the monster version of Wave-Motion Cannon (Not exactly, but you know what I mean) Keep it on the field long enough and it's OTK!

For a dude who loves machines, I LOVE THIS CARD! Always wanted one. Are we getting the weaker version of Satellite Base?

I think this was Sat Base

Satellite Base
Effect Monster (Machine / LIGHT / 4 Stars / ATK 0 / DEF 0)
This monster cannot by destroyed as a result of battle by Level 5 or lower monsters. (Damage calculation is applied normally.) Increase the DEF of this monster by 1000 points during each of your End Phases.

Correct me if I missed a text of Sat Base.

haha i use prohibition in my stein deck to counter wabokus and kuribohs...so ur not alone djp...

Hmmmm... Satellite Cannon

Along with cyber phoenix and limiter removal, very nice. And very searchable by last will, shing angel and damage condenser...

Of course, actually getting hold of one will be the trick. If only UDE would do what konami/shonen jump do in terms of releasing packs with set cards in, like the movie pack was. Probably a much faster way of catching up. *sigh*

Now I just need to find a place that runs official tourneys.

Well personally I prefer them just as singles, regardless of whether they are holo or common. However, having a holo Lord of D. and Flute is not too bad. I figured that if UDE reprinted cards like Soul Exchange and Last Will, they would follow suit with other Starter Deck cards. In addition, I eventually decided not to use cards unless they are singles from a pack, and not bother with any Starter or Structure Deck cards.
