Respond vs Chain?

Hello

I am asking on behalf of a friend who wants to know if there is a difference between Responding and Chaining. I have read the articles on Netrep about Chaining and think this is just a terminology issue.

I believe that a player can Respond to any action and if there is a further Response, then a Chain starts.

Is it as simple as I have just stated?

Thanks

Not even close. I hate you for even bringing this up. Well, I'm kidding, as always. But you really have wrecked my whole morning. What the heck, I've been set off, I may as well explain this.

A chain builds. It then resolves. In reverse order. This means that something (A) chained to something else (B) will resolve BEFORE B, even though it (A) was activated later. Chaining exists only in the example of things with spell speeds. You cannot chain to a summon, an attack, or a continuous effect, because those beasties don't have spell speeds. You cannot chain to an Archfiend, don't ask why, I'm not in the mood to explain it.

Responding is a more general term, but INCLUDES chaining in its definintion. THe difference being that chaining can only occur when you're chaining to an effect that has activated, but not resolved. When you're building a chain. RESPONDING, however, CAN (not must) initiate a NEW chain. Here are some of the things you can respond to:

A summon (Trap Hole)
An attack (Magic Cylinder)
The beginning of a phase (there is always a point here where turn player has priority to begin a chain)
An effect activating (remember that responding CAN be the same as chaining)

So a response is any effect activated directly following another event, be it a chain or not. Don't ask me to explain a non-responsive window, you want an explanation of that, go read "Enemy Controller question".

PS Please excuse my bad attitude, I just got up, and here you come with this big question :D

Respond vs Chain

Thanks PSSVR,

I deeply apologise for wrecking your morning. I was actually hoping to do something like this and it looks like I succeeded. Hoorah :)

Seriously, you answered my question very clearly, using words that will be easy to relate to my friend. I know my initial wording was a bit light-on but your explanation is exactly the sort of thing I was thinking of.

Thanks again

Word. You didn't wreck my morning. I actually found that little (huge) exercise a great substitute for caffeine. I'm glad your friend will understand my words, I feel much better knowing that XD lol.

PS For personal reasons, I would prefer my name not be capitalized. Thanks! :D
