Simple trap-timing questions...

Now we've always done this, but it seems maybe you can't.. You can't activate Call of the Haunted during the damage step, can you?

Or most traps other than counter or anything dealing with attack etc. That's what I'm getting from reading the rulings.

The only cards you can activate in the Damage Step are cards that directly alter ATK/DEF, or cards that specifically say they can be activated in the Damage Step.

Call of the Haunted is certainly not one of those.

There are two different times in a battle in which you can activate cards. The first is the Battle Step, in which you can activate any cards you want (Traps and Quick-Play Spells only, of course). This happens immediately after a player says, "I'll attack X-Head Cannon with Y-Dragon Head" (etc.). This is the only time you activate Negate Attack, Draining Shield and so forth (cards that deal with attacks) - moreover, cards that deal with attacks can ONLY be activated first thing in the Battle Phase (i.e. in the first Chain).

The second time is the Damage Step, which I explained above. This time occurs AFTER you flip a monster face-up. You're well into the battle now.

There's a big complicated chart explaining an entire battle somewhere here. Someone will post a link, I'm sure. I don't know it offhand.

Ok thanks. The big problem is then is that no one around here says they're entering their battle phase. You kinda gotta be like "ok before you attack I'm going to activate this" then if you want something activated during the battle phase.

(like call of the haunted before their attack so they must destroy the monster with their Lightening vortex during main phase 2, thus causing them to miss their battle phase.)

Looks like you have a lot to learn ^_^

You can activate Call of the Haunted at the very start of your opponent's Battle Phase, before they declare an attack, and Special Summon a monster. Then your opponent can attack however they like.

You can activate Call of the Haunted in response to an attack, and the Special Summon of the monster causes a REPLAY. Essentially, your opponent reselects an attack target for their monster that was going to attack, or they stop attacking with that monster (it's still considered to have attacked this turn, though, so normally it won't be able to attack again this turn). Read up on Replays for more information.

What activating Call of the Haunted will NOT do is to force your opponent to miss/skip their Battle Phase/forfeit their attacks this turn.

haha I meant if I was open and I summon a monster they can't kill, they're forced to use lightening vortex (just an example card) their main phase 2 instead of main phase one, thus not being able to attack that turn.

It turns out I've been doing it the right way anyway, then. I was thinking not during damage step meant not in response to an attack, so I got confused. So you can activate anything like gravity bind or evacuation device when they try to attack then, right?

Anything at all, yes (except the cards that say they can't be activated in the Battle Phase, etc.).

That "it's a monster that the opponent can't deal with (be it too high an ATK or whatever)" was a key part of your statement. It's always better to include key points. ;)

yea sorry, I was kinda just rambling. This topic makes it look like I'm a big yugioh noob I know, but I've been playing for quite a while now. I just got confused from something but I think it's fine.
