Team battles

Working with the PTO Pastimes out of Niles, IL I've either judged or been at 2 Team Battle events as a side event at an SJC. They were both well recieved, players acted in a sporting manner...and it gave them an outlet for the talk they like to talk.

The way we've worked them is that each team has 3 players...an "A" player, "B" player, and a "C" player. Each player will always be that letter for the course of the tournament. Each team matches up that way as well, A against A, B against B, and C against C.

Each set of players has a regular match, the team match is decided by which team wins at least 2 of their matches.

Player "A" is the team captain. All players must remain at the table until all of their respective individual matches are complete. Once that is done the team capatain calls for a judge who verifies the results of the team match and collects the match slip.

Each team is seated all on one side of the table, talking is permited among team members so long as they don't leave their seat or cause great delay (20 seconds or so)

Other than that the rules are the same as in a regular Yugioh match.

Mantis is set up now to run such a team event...though I'm told it has a little quirk that's being worked on.

This has been a lot of fun. If memory serves me correctly, the first team event in Chicago last year had 26-28 teams. This year at Collinsville, IL SJC....help me here Doc....how many? My guess is about 24 teams.

Your opinion on this? Would you like to see more team battles at major events?

Mantis is set up now to run such a team event...though I'm told it has a little quirk that's being worked on.

Wait? What? It is? Which version and how do I get to it?

I'll have to check into that for you, I wasn't the one running Mantis...but according to the manager of Pastimes it's set up for team play.

I think it sounds like an awesome idea! I'm glad they're working that system in. It gives some new approaches to deck building and team unity.

Do you mean the sponsored teams, or any group of players? For example, "Comic Odyssey", or "djp952, Dillie-O, and densetsu_x" (... go into a bar and see a man sitting at the table in the corner ... lol ... it just degenerates from there)

I have mixed feelings about the sponsored teams and their involvement with large events.

Overall it sounds very cool, though. Hope it doesn't end up dominated by the same people that try to dominate the SJCs. I would like to participate in something like that someday, if it's just teams of friends.

I like the idea of the unholy, armageddon alliance of Fiend, Spellcasters, and whatever crazy-yet-highly-innovative deck densetsu comes up with. We'll flay those CC decks three different ways 8^D

I played in the first one in Chicago, which John Danker was the HJ of I'm pretty sure. Any team of 3 friends can register. Advice was also allowed to be given within your team, if you could not decide how you wanted to play your hand.

It was very cool. I hope more PTOs than Pastimes have some kind of team challenge at their SJCs.

Right...we had everything from 3 kids ages 8-11 as a team to the highly orgainzed and promoted teams you're used to hearing about.

We had our reservations at first wondering if the matches and time between might become heated, (as one might sometimes see on the boards) however, I had made it clear that how the participants acted at these early team battles may very well determine weather any PTO would hold another such tournament in the future. We were very impressed in that there wasn't a problem with sportsmanship at all....quite on the contrary. I hadn't heard so much laughter and seen so many people having fun at a Yugioh tournament in years!
