The Focus - What is your focus?

Ive been around many games since I was 13. I started with Magic, then moved down to yugi, then vs. then shaman king, then etc.. till i came back around to magic.

No other card game can be more complex than magic (at times, not most)

but this doesnt neceserally mean im just gonna talk about Magic while posting this up on a YGO discussion forum. That would be rediculous.

So, the Focus of this thread is FOCUS, what is your focus, what is your decks Focus.

Not so long ago, I replied to a thread were we were talking about a specific type of deck. The deck if stayed with the same Focus would end up having too many flaws. Counters were used in other decks that made the deck not as solid.

People complained and stated that when you focus on 1 strategy then you mostlikely have so much syenergy to care what happens. I felt, this is a bit incorrect.

While its true having card be syenergy to each other is good, it also means that you are too wrapped around that strategy that you forget, that counters will be played in due time.

In yugi, if you decided one day to say "well im going to play only 5 spell and 17 traps, I bet i will do good becuase my traps will have syenergy to each other" true they may and can, but there are easy counters to this, 1x jinzo and 3x royal decree, not to mention 3x mobious.

easy way to get countered considering these cards already see play.

so what do you do, you go the opposite make your spell syenergy and traps less so that you dont have to worry to much on getting negated often.

but what if we then said, "how about i use raw monster destruction. 3x Smashing Ground, 3x Fissure, 3x Hammer shot, 1x Dark hole, 1x lightning vortex, 1x nobleman of crossout."

that alone took 12 spots in a 40-41 card deck. While yes 12 spell that can destroy monsters, is good. And we know that field presence is often times the key to victory, we know that we have way to much offense for monsters and very little defense for spell or traps.

that can be a bit of a problem.

so we then decided, that going raw monster destruction isnt just the key and we decide to trow in some spell / trap removal.

3x Dust tornado, 1x Heavy storm, 2-3x Giant trunade, 1x Mystical space typhoon, 3x Mobious the frost monarch.

that could work too but then we have to downgrade monster destruction. not to mention monster / graveyard recursion.

often times you find your self wanting to focus too much on 1 thing and very little on another. Mr. John Danker mention this week that Mr Froze had gotten into the top 8's at SJC LA.

if we look at the deck, we can see that the main focus was to be able to counter anything. That that the deck would be able to counter everything since often times you have to rely on what will come up next in your deck. A counter that you have in your hand may not be usefull till 3 or 5 turns from now while other counters will work in an instant.

solid deck, with everything to possibly help him in any situation.

Balance also comes to mind as how many of each card was put in if not already restricted.

- The less of a card that you can use, The more of a card that you need to fetch it out.

Example is, Magician of Faith is restricted to 1, you would oviously add in 1x Sangan, and 2-3x Apprentice magician, the reason for this is because not only do you have the luck of drawing it out, you also can time it so that you get 3-4 other chances of pulling out of your deck.

- Never by any means sacrafice a legitament position.
Your decks want to run 3x Feather wind. but you also want to run 3x Elemental Hero Avian. a good rule is not to over use alot of the cards. the best way is make sure you have less of a card that you neceserally dont want to draw out but search out.

so a good position with out sacraficing a legitament position would be.
2x Elemental Hero Avian
3x Feather wind
2x Reinforcement of the army

this leads to you being able to search it out or draw it at any particular time with out it getting in the way and also leaving room for one more crature that may actually help you.

Should I Ditch Jinzo to run 3x Royal decree isnstead? Possibly, depending on the trategy you would much rather run, Would you like to have high odds of having a trap negator? or would you want to take the odds and hope your opponent already wasted all spell and trap destruction card?

- Question your startegy

Many times I've had to ask my self, "Will this startegy actually work?" I would put my self in any posible situation and see if I could get out of it. Can I live for more than 2 turns with the same creature?

- Play Test.

Play test as much as possible when ever. Theoretically a deck can work, but with out the actual play there is no way to find out how balanced or how well the deck may work. Can't play test with other people you say? Play Test against your self, a good rule for this is, "I will never have an advantage, my opponent will always have a way to respond, and finally my opponent will always have good hand management"

why do this? because it is the best way to test your self.

Your first move will always be what you will normally do.
Your opponents first move will generally be destroying what you have done and give you a hit.
Your move will be to respond to that.
their move will be to respond to yours.

and back and forth till you see no way out.

of course an actually game may not go like this, but it is safe to say, that you gain more knowledge than you do, if you didnt.

- my Final toughts on the matter.

Coincidentally, I wont be judging or doing any of the rules oriented issue, but play casually when people ask to play. Not to mention I havent bought a pack of yugi since The Lost Millenium got released. But continue my deck building intitative to find all strategical aspect of this game and any game i come into contact.

I've learned so much from playing this game and playing the black and white jungle.

Focus, is key to winning. Always be confident. and If you want to play and have apprentice, we can give it a shot sometime. :)

Completly agree with you. A deck can not have a single focus because there is always one card that messes up the whole deck. Final attack order? Skill Drain? Last Turn? Royal Decree!!

People were in awe by the new Bazoo x3/retrun from the differant dimension x3 deck and the very next day I played against one, lost the first game, sided in my second decree and Jinzo, and won the second two games for the match.

The key to having a good deck to to asses the meta and ask yourself these questions:
how much s/t destruction do I need?
how many beatsticks do I need?
What is a good number for traps? for monsters?
How many tribute monsters can my deck handle? what ones do I use?
how many weak monsters can I run and not lose the game to field presence?
What cards do I need to worry about? How do I counter them?

you need to have a balance.

I agree with that. I mean, today I see people just basing their Decks on one strategy. I ask them, what are you going to do when someone takes out your strategy? When I make my Decks, I make them with a lot of these questions in mind:

What do I need for S/T removal?
What other monster strategies can I use?

And so on. Take a look at the Deck in my signature. I try to show it to people who ask about my Decks and show them that when you rely on 1 theme, it will be easier to defeat, but when you have different strategies to fall back on, not ruining the synergy in your Deck then you can adjust to almost any situation. Not saying you will be prepared for every situation, but a good deal. I mean if I lost Water Dragon in my Deck, I would move onto the Magnet Warriors or Megarock or any other of those combinations.
