Treeborn Frog SOI-EN025? (Yomigaeru SOI-JP025)

I think I said something like, "I'll probably rate Mythical Beast Cerberus, Magical Dimension"...

I lied? I don't know. I think I said maybe. For now, I'll rate another card, and then go back. Hey, it's my topic.

Anyway, before I go back to the recent new releases, I'm just gunna go ahead and rate the most powerful card among the upcoming cards in the next Shadow of Infinity Pack.

Yes I'm talking the most horrid, the most powerful, the ultimate, weenie 100ATK monster?

Yeah, it's Yomigaeru. I think the English version, it's gunna be named Treeborn Frog. I've heard of this in some places. Who knows. But for now, I'm gunna call it Treeborn Frog, and then change it to whatever the real name is once the name is confirmed. (This is USA YGO forum.)

Now, let's see it's weenie power.

(Copied from dmcomet and it's JPN text.)

SOI-JP025
Yomigaeru ("Yomi Frog")
Water/Aqua/1/100/100
When this card is in your Graveyard at your Standby Phase, and you don't have Magic/Trap
cards on your field, you can special summon this card to your field. This effect
cannot be activate if a [Yomigaeru] is face-up on your field.
Rare

Basically, it's a "weak" monster as in 100ATk and 100DEF. It's not gunna be able to kill anything. Even Magician of Faith can kill this card. It's just that weak in number stats. But then, why does no one uses Lust Dragon or Blue-Eyes White Dragon if they got supreme numbers. That's cause often time, the effect can make a weenie card supreme, and a powerful stat card into crap.

So let's look at the stats. It basically says, as long as you have no s/t on your field, at your stand-by phrase, you can special summon from the graveyard. Yeah, it's a free summon. And it's optional meaning you can choose to have one, or not have one. Whatever. And since it's a special summon, you can still normal summon a monster. So you got instant 2 card swarm. But you'll be saying, "Swarm with 100ATK." Well Jim, no don't put this in ATK position, just put it in DEF position and it's a 1 turn hit wall. But then you'll be saying Spirit Reaper is better then that. But here's the thing, this comes out from the graveyard. So there is absolutely no hand cost. So it's instant field advantage. Spirit Reaper, you have to at least waste a normal summon. THis card doesn't

However, that's not the true nature of this card. I said a free 1 monster on the field as special summon. And since you got a 1 normal summon choice and you got 1 monster on the field. That's right, the true power of this card is that it's a bonus freebie tribute. Yep, a free Tribute. So if your packing alot of lvl 5-6 monster, this card is for YOU! (Yes, I'm talking to you Soul Control Moarchy decks. This is your best hot sexy wife you'll ever get.) Heck, this card is for everybody. (Sorry Soul Control, but this card also goes around and give freebie hot loving service to everyone else for free. She's too hot. What can you do. She got an unending love to every living tribute monsters.)

So like I said, this is a Soul Control's dream. With this card addition, you don't even NEED to worry about having a Snatch Steal, or Brain Control, or Soul Exchange, to get a tribute monster summon. Even without that, you always have 1 monster wall. So this card is god in late ending part of the metagames where everyone will be top-decking. Say the game is almost over and you got no cards on the field or hand and your top-decking. You drew Mobius. But there's no mosnter to tribute summon this. In most cases, this is a dead draw and you lost your match. However, now with this card, you can choose to summon Treeborn Frog from the graveyard at your stand-by Phase, tribute it for Mobius, knock every other s/t on the foe's field, and go for the win. Good job, you just won your game! And it's all thanks to Treeborn Frog. Even if you top decking and you drew a useless card, you can summon Treeborn Frog for a 1 turn stall. This can be good when you top-decked Return from the Different Dimension. This card is considered one of the best top-deck cards. But the only prob is, you have to wait 1 turn. And in alot of cases, you just don't have the time. Come in Treeborn Frog, just stall 1 turn so I can summon my 3x DDA, 1x DDWL for OTK win the game.

If you haven catch the drift. This card is the younger brother of the evil Sinister Serpent. If Sinister Serpent was a free-discard, 1 free monster card in hand broken card, this card is 1 free tribute, 1 free monster on field card broken card. This card doesn't have the broken deadly poison poison like his evil brother, but lick this toad and you'll be seeing stars, stars of when your foe's Moby Whale just nuked the entire field that is.

I'm actually expecting some counter techs to be almost a staple in deck design or side-decks JUST to counter this. Remember when DDA hit the US world? People were packing 3x DDA, 1x DDWL to mass removal. And then ram RftDD OTK at the late final part of the battle. People are teching, AND STILL TECHING, D.D. Survivor JUST to counter these cards. D.D. Survivor, the effect by itself, is a crappy card. But since DDA/DDWL are running way too often and wreaking havoc, people have no choice but to tech it. With Treeborn Frog, I'm expecting the revival of Soul Release spell card, and Kycoo the Ghost Destroyer as monster card. I mean come on, Kycoo DIED quite awhile ago. But it might be the only thing to get rid of that Treeborn Frog from the graveyard and put it removed from play so they can't keep that frog in there.

But even WITH Kycoo, there's still gunna be major annoyance. I mean, look at DDS. Sure, it's tech can kill DDA/DDWL just safely. But then your foe summons Cyber Dragon, kill DDS, and THEN summon another copy of DDA on the field. Now you HAVE to bring back DDS and waste a CotH/Premature just to get rid of another DDA. I can see the same picture for Treeborn Frogs if people runs these in triples. I set Treeborn Frog. Then my foe kills it and send it to the grave. Now your foe have to tech Kycoo/Soul Release to get rid of Treeborn Frog. Now I summon Cyber Dragon to kill off Kycoo. Then I set another 2nd copy of Treeborn Frog. Now your foe have to CotH/Premature their Kycoo or MoF their Soul Release. They were able to get rid of my 2nd Treeborn Frog. I get rid of Kycoo again, and then set my final 3rd Treeborn Frog.... now I need to run away from the game after I win cause he's gunna come running at me with a baseball bat pounded with nails.

You kinda see where I'm going with this. I mean, this card, literally downgrade all level 5-6 monster cards into lvl 4 normal summoning without tribute monster. And as a bonus, with no cost cause there's no hand disadvantage. Now people can FINALLY maybe use those lvl 7-8 cards they never bothered using cause those cards have no been downgraded to lvl 5-6 with no cost.

And final thought. Treeborn Frog effect can only be done when there's no 0 s/t on your field. Meaning, people are not gunna be running that many continous spell/traps anymore. (Say good by to Royal Decree?) Now the ONLY continu-ish card people will use are CotH/Premature/Snatch Steal.

(Besides also in SOI Silent Insect. A total Countinous card counter. If you want to know that stat.

SOI-JP020
Silent Insect
Earth/Insect/2/200/300
When this card is successfully Normal Summoned or Reverse Summoned put it in defense mode. When this card is face-up on the field, negate the effects of all Continuous Magic and Continuous Trap cards.

Yep, it means this card can TOTALLY KILL all burn/stall Decks. Say goodbye to Royal Decree/Gravity Bind/LLAB/Skill Drain/etc. Another good bug, and another card I'll rate in the future.)

And guess what, since people won't be setting too many s/t on the field, this actually WEAKENS your Mobius. (ZOMG, Mobius weakened? BLASHEMY!) Now listen out. Since Mobius is a tribute monster, to get the fair 2 vs 2 trade, you need to and should destroy 2 sets of your foe's s/t. So if your foe's is using like just 1 s/t for the entire duel cause of Treeborn Frog on the graveyard, then well you cannot fully use the power of Mobius. And guess what, after you DO bring out Mobius and then destroy all cards on the foe's field. Then your foe will bring out Treeborn Frog at stand-by Phrase, and then summon HIS Mobius to instantly nuke your 2 s/t you set after you bring out Mobius. See what I'm saying of how Mobius power have been weakened by Treeborn Frog, it's instant equaliser that works both ways. (It's kinda funny. This card is Soul Control's wife, and yet at the same time sleeping with other deck styles and majorly hurting it. Like I said, this card just goes away giving service to any tribute monster.) It's kinda like how Thestalos the Firestorm Monarch and Don Zaloog gotten severly weakened just because of Dark World monsters and especially cause of Goldd, Wu-Lord of Dark World.

Overall, this card is 1 card combo. Don't need support but instead support all others. If supported, turns totally evil. run it in 3's and it's extremely overkill for your foe to counter. The fact that I'm seeing tech-counter cards coming from it's "trash section" ashes to counter this card shows it's enormous powers.

------------------

In the end, I give this card a

11 out of 10

That's right TCG world. PLEASE semi-limit to 2 or restrict this card into 1 per deck. This toad licking is just too powerful for one man to handle without going into coma seeing stars and swirlies.

(NOTE: To my other card rating and how I do things, please check my Lets Study cards with the Doctor)

Mark my words, everyone is gonna flock to this card when it's released only to see it crash and burn.
Soul Control w/ Yomigaeru x3 is definately tier 1 in Japan right now, following close behind Merchant Pot Turbo (MPT).

Exactly. 3x in any deck is usually NOT to get all 3x draws or out on the field, but to just increase the chance of drawing at least 1 out. (Unless the deck is build so you can mass search summon) People don't pack 3x DDA just so that they can mass remove alot of monsters will taking hits, it's to mainly so that they at least draw 1x DDA in the gameplay. I mean, 1x per deck only cards, they like pot luck draws when you get them. With 3x, your almost garenteed to get 1 to your hand during the duel.

I'm saying, I can so see Treeborn Frog running in 2~3x packs in some deck styles if built right. (especially for Soul Control, then they don't have to depend on Snatch Steal/Brain Control/Soul Exchange. Now those cards will just be a "bonus" of getting rid of extra monster for tribute, not always having to tribute something off to get the monarchs.)

And if you thought Scapegoat + Creature Swap was bad, think of Treeborn Frog combo with that. You Creature Swap your Treeborn Frog, you kill that frog, then you summon it again at your stand-by phase for another Creature Swap. Heck, with Mystic Box that's 5x potential card swappers spells for an 100ATK weakass monster of Treeborn Frog for free targetting. (Check my Fenrir-Lock Deck) The possibilitys are SICK.

I'm really not expecting D.D. Assailant to get touched by the bans, if he does, Phoenix will gain more power. And yeah, I really don't think D.D. Assailant is that "great" I didn't run him for a while and my deck was fine.

But if he does, that'll prove me wrong.

From what I know, it's almost confirmed that DDA will be restricted to 1 per deck in USA version of YGOTCG in the April update of forbidden ban list. But yeah, no one is 100% until it actually happens.

Bah, Phoenix, that card isn't THAT powerful cause it's 1 per deck now. If Phoenix get's popular, Chainsaw Insect from SOI is a good remedy, or bring back Ha Des I guess.

The frog is kool but it really restricts you from what you set.

if you know that trap wont be activated during your opponetns turn that means you wont be setting it, and not setting it means taking a nasty hit.

the frog again is kool but not restriction worthy. It limits it self with its effect.

you want Pwnage, Dandelion is pwnage. the Frog is just... I dunno.

he can Backfire just put it this way.

The frog is good. It's restriction is not.

To take full advantage of Treeborn Frog, you have to have more chainable S/T cards so that it's effect can trigger. Sakus and Widespreads won't be much help in Special Summoning Treeborn Frog from the Grave.

The best part? It's effect can trigger more than once in the same Standby Phase. You can Special Summon it, tribute it with Enemy Controller to steal an opponent's monster, and Special Summon it again. I like that combo.

Necrovalley can't touch this thing. End of Anubis screws it up. King Tiger Wanghu also messes with Treeborn Frog. Special Summon the frog and King Tiger destroys it. Incidentally, if you keep trying to Special Summon Treeborn Frog while King Tiger is in play, that will be stalling.

Solution to the frog...

This is the card that will deal with the Treeborn Frog. You should see this side deck or main decked depending on what your metagame is like. On the bigger tourney scene this will be in every deck at least side decked. Hear me now believe me later.

Chain Disappearance
Normal Trap
You can only activate this card when a monster(s) with an ATK of 1000 or less is Normal Summoned, Flip Summoned or Special Summoned. Remove from play those Summoned monster(s), and your opponent removes from play all monsters of the same name in their hand and Deck. Their Deck is then shuffled.

Crash

I believe, unless I'm mistaken, that there's a rather simple counter out there from the new set:

Karma Cut - Trap

Discard 1 card from your hand. Remove from play 1 face-up monster on your opponent's side of the field. If there is a card (s) in your opponents Graveyard with the same name as the removed monster, also remove from play that card (s).

Very simple and effective. Activate this when they summon Treeborn, it's gone, along with any others in the grave already.

It will be interesting to play with and against, but people will start playing specific counters or will adapt current strategies to deal with it. Ultimately, it wont be the amazingly big deal that people think it is going to be.
This happens to a lot of cards. Remember V-lord, Morphing Jar, Needle Worm, wabokou, dark world etc...

Yo, there's some rulings for Treeborn Frogs already!

  1. If you Special Summon "Treeborn Frog" during your Standby Phase, then it's sent to the Graveyard during that same Standby Phase (like if it's Tributed for "Enemy Controller"), you can Special Summon "Treeborn Frog" again that same Standby Phase.
  2. If you start your Standby Phase with "Messenger of Peace" face-up on the field, you can choose not to pay the maintenance cost so it is destroyed, then Special Summon "Treeborn Frog".
  3. If you have 2 or more "Treeborn Frogs" in your Graveyard, you can activate and resolve the effect of 1, but then you cannot activate and resolve the effect of the 2nd one because you now have a face-up "Treeborn Frog" on the field.
  4. "Necrovalley" will not negate the effect of "Treeborn Frog".
  5. If an effect is chained to "Treeborn Frog" that puts a Spell or Trap Card on your side of field, then "Treeborn Frog's" effect will not resolve. Example: The opponent controls your "Embodiment of Apophis" and activates "Remove Brainwashing".
  6. If the effect of "Treeborn Frog" is negated, you can activate its effect again during the same Standby Phase and Special Summon it.
  7. If "King Tiger Wanghu" is on the field when "Treeborn Frog" is Special Summoned, "Treeborn Frog" will be destroyed, but can be Special Summoned again with its effect during the same Standby Phase. Doing so without purpose is considered stalling and is a violation of Tournament Policy.

ZOMG! Treeborn Frog + Enemy Controller is SOOOOO gunna be evil! Steal a monster AND still get Treeborn Frog on the field. It's instant 2 TRIBUTES! It's smack-daddy for lvl 8 monster time!

And lol at King Tiger Wanghu + Treeborn Frog. That might be funny to watch.

Interesting.
So what purpose can we achieve with this?

a: DNA Transplant + Backfire?
b: Card of Safe Return. Draw your entire deck!
c: Coffin Seller if your opponent tries that same trick
d: Fatal Abacus if you want to reduce your LP for some reason

Im sure that there are other combos out there. Personally, I like the Card of Safe Return variant. Time to restructure my Exodia deck I feel...

I'm fine with all of these cards to counter Treeborn Frog.

Karma Cut? Chain Dissapearence. As long as you lose cards, I'm fine.

The card is mostly SPLASHED into decks. It doesn't rely on the Treeborn Frog. And when Treeborn Frog is absent, I can still run the deck efficiently. And I don't think Treeborn Frog limits what you set.

If you have a Sakuretsu Armor face-down. You don't need a monster like Treeborn Frog on your field. It's just defense.

If you have a card like Dust Tornado, then..you have a problem.

But personally with Treeborn Frog, you can put your Mobius the Frost Monarch count at an all-time high.

Speaking of which, I will be posting my new deck later on tonight. So far, it's working beautifully. :)

It's fast, keeps advantage. And most of all! It runs Treeborn Frogs!

If this card is in your Graveyard during your Standby Phase and there are no Spell or Trap Cards on your side of the field, you can Special Summon this card to your side of the field. This effect cannot be activated if there is a face-up "Treeborn Frog" on your side of the field.

So No to all of the above.

Ooops!
My fault for not reading the card properly... correction appreciated :)
Oh well, it would have been nice.
*sigh*

Hmm- monster combos? Are there any monsters with effects that might benefit from the frog/king tiger combo?
I was hoping for something like the Maji-Gire Panda effect... but this wont work as Treeborn Frog is aqua, not beast. There must be something else out there!

I think returning Treeborn Frog and launching him consistently with Cannon Soldier would be fun. Obviously everyone has already thought of the heavy tribute monster abuse. I also think using Treeborn Frog with Share the Pain will be fun too.

The contents of this post are property of Jeremy Johnson, copyright 2006. Any reproduction of the combos contained herein without proper credit being given to the original owner are subject to severe beatdown.

Yeah, Treeborn Frog plus Share the Pain would be so annoying.

Also, After much thought, there's 2 ways to use Enemy Controller with Treeborn Frog.

#1 was already mentioned, you play Enemy Controller in your hand when you special summon Treeborn Frog to your field.

#2: You have 1 monster on your side of the field (Probably a Reaper) and you have 1 set Enemy Controller set. Then yeah, tribute Reaper to steal a monster, then yay, your s/t field is blank again so you can special summon Treeborn Frog. Another 2 free tribute for lvl 8 monster summon. This one have the element of surprise cause people won't expect a Treeborn Frog cause you have a s/t set.

Or you can combine Treeborn Frog summon with Snatch Steal/Brain Control/Soul Exchange for lvl 8 but you know where I'm going with this.

And I don't think Dust Tornado is too much of a prob. As long as there's a s/t set on the foe's field, you can activate it during draw phase or stand-by phase to special summon Treeborn Frog.
