UDE Interview

Maybe it's just in my neck of the woods but UDE has had policy for a long time that sent product to Retail a few days earlier than it would be available to Hobby. Some of the shop owners I know have both hobby and retail accounts so they can get product on time to compete for those of us that want the cards ASAP.

It's amazing it took them so long to figure out that they have been hurting the shops most of us spend our time in with their old policies.

I have actually seen the exact opposite with where I live. Retail has usually lagged behind the hobby store that I go to by about a month. But lately that has been reversing itself.

The stores around where I am from seem to get them around the same time as Retail chains do. And I know they get hobby boxes, so it must be dependent on where you are too.

So where will hobby leagues be? At hobby shops or at something like Toys R Us? The owner of the hobby shop I always go to hasn't said much to us about anything if he does know something.

We learned a hard lesson with Shaman King, a great game design and a cool IP with hardcore fans; unfortunately the TV show underperformed and was canceled. This was a reality Upper Deck had no control over and we were put in a difficult spot, we were forced to cancel the game and disappoint a small group of Shaman King TCG fans. This sort of scenario is exactly what we believe is fracturing and eroding the consumer base for the category, so we decided that in the future most licensed TCG products from Upper Deck will live on one of several "gaming platforms."

Maybe if thouse fools wouldnt have licensed only to retail the TCG could have kept going!

That was the one game that i trully indeed loved to play just plain out raw.

I loved the artwork, i loved the mechanics, i loved everything about that game.

BUT ONLY BECUASE THE ANIME/ MANGA just got cancelled doesnt mean that had to just cancel the game too!!!!

I was so heartbroken when i saw the game go absolutely no ware.

heck not even the hobby shops carried the game cause those fools decided to license to block buster!

See this is where UDE seems to be incapable of understanding the market. When you are selling product that is based on the latest cartoon or movie the life expectancy is typically thought to only last as long as the show is high in the ratings.

Did Magic need a cartoon to make Wizards of the Coast into what they are today? Has the player base for VS been nothing but diehard comic book fans? Do all the Yugioh players faithfully watch the cartoon and plan on quitting as soon as the series is canceled?

UDE and Konami are definitely profitting from the cartoon aspect of Yugioh. And indeed thousands of cases sell to the "target market" of little kids pestering their mother to buy them the cards for the cartoon they watch. And naturally those sales will take a nose dive as soon as the show falls off in ratings. But they seem incapable of understanding the gamers market. They are nearly unparalleled in their lack of responsiveness to ruling questions for the game. The tournament system is plagued with problems. The promo releases have little at all to do with competitive gaming. And the flow of information from them to the individual gamers is an attrocity.

Couple that with the mismanagement of licensed products following the movie release (hey - news flash morons parents aren't that keen on buying $30+ dollar toys from movies for little kids that have a new favorite movie next month) and no adult wants a shiny reminder of the card that they can't play because you dorks won't get us the other card we would need.

seriously, UDE has been messing up. Shaman King was a very good game and just to kill it like that.

really they didnt even give it a chance.

I didnt see it out side of retailers. Which is wrong because non of the hobby people knew what was going on.

It was way easier to play than yugi or any other game. but nope, they had to just kill it off.

Fan base or not, when you release a game you need to keep going with it unless you do what the peeps at score do and just kill the game and run it up again with a new series, im talking about Dragon ball Z tcg here, it used to be CCG then went to Dragon Ball GT CCG and now Dragon Ball Z TCG, which is actually super easy to play, and i havent seen the anime since i was a child.

so basically you dont need anime's or anything to start a game. look at Duel master, im not talking smack on it, but it doesnt seem to be doing very very well.

lets look at pokemon, the fad ended along time ago and i still hear people talk about it and WOTC making sets for it.
