What to do, oh what to do with these people.....

Well this was just under a week after the Hurricane hit Florida last October. Cable was out in the surrounding counties for like two weeks and, honestly what computer other than a laptop has a telephone modem built in these days?

The guy was beyond reason in this case and was launching some rather objectionable language.

That was the point I decided a DQ was in order as his conduct was COMPLETELY out of line.

It's a Game, there's absolutely no need to get as worked up as he was about it.

Like I said, I don't like issuing ANY penalties. So far that's been my only DQ in the entire time I've been a Judge (Around three years) and I've only ever issued one game loss. As yet no match loses.

Warnings are another matter of course ^_^ There's always going to be a few people in each seasons new crop that will act out innapropriately.

When stuff like that happen just chill the person down and ask them how much knowledge of the game they actually have.

Then teach them the game. they will be stumped to realize that they made a mistake.

give them an example. sometimes it helps. over all at hobby shops, peeps shouldnt get that crazy.

we have this one guy were i play magic, man... if the guys make him get worked up he will get really loud real fast, and me in the other hand go right up to him and in a low voice tell him, "calm down. PLEASE." and give them the "stare" after that they chill down.

in the end at hobby league it all comes down to respect.

Believe me, I tried. I hate handing down loses and having to DQ that player is still one of my least favorite moments in my time as a judge.

I'm aware however that sometimes hard decissions have to be made for the benefit of the majority.

When he refused to calm down and kept insisting that his way was the right way I had no choice.

I called the store owner over and issued the DQ.

The Store owner agreed and told him to come back when he can play calmly and not act like a madman when things don't go his way.

<nodding> I've had a couple situations where it's been difficult too. While you hate to issue a DQ you have to look at the bigger picture. You can't let one or two people set the mood for a tournament or more importantly a whole store and future tournaments. If people see someone throwing a fit and nothing being done about it then you'll lose the respect of the players, you'll lose players from coming there, and you'll lose control of the tournament.

I agree that it's important when you do DQ a player to keep a VERY calm demenor, explain why you're doing so, make sure they know that they're invited back to play again when they can control their temper / language / attitude and that they are wanted as a player so long as they can do so.

It's often very difficult to maintain a calm demenor and keep your temper in check when DQing a very disruptive player, however, raising your voice or showing signs of ill temper only makes the scenario escalate and puts the other players on edge. Keeping your cool makes the players feel you're in control and everything is just fine.

My biggest problems come from the adults who play. They say, "I'm an adult, I can use whatever language I want (right in front of an 11 year old--my daughter). My retort is, IF you're an adult, you shouldn't need to use that kind of language, as you should have a larger vocabulary than that.

I promise you, I see some 5 year olds playing the game with better sportsmanship that the 25 year olds. Kids are less likely to get up in my face about something, but some of these 20-somethings (I'm late 30s, but look early 20s) need a time-out.

The adults are the ones you really can let get out of hand. If the kids see them doing so and you let it slide then of course they think that poor behavior is appropriate and perhaps even admirable.

I have a zero tolerance policy with adult misbehavior. The kids I bend a little on as they're still learning what is and isn't acceptable at times.

Exactly, The guy I DQ'ed was about 17 and had a real chip on his shoulder.

Normally at these events kids will settle after you speak over the din.

Barring that a Warning tends to settle them down pretty quickly.

I had a dude who told me that if I tsukuyomi/Book of Mooned my "snatch steal"ed monster, it returns back to his field in face-down defense position and he told me he read that on UDE official website...

He also "negated" my summon with Compulsory Evacuation Device. (i.e. negated the priority. I was playing a ritual deck and he negated my Manju.)

I won overall but I "let him go" in those situations. I also didn't re-summon my Cyber Dragon when he used CED on it. (It's a special summon so I can pretty much re-summon that thing over and over if it's in my hand)

Thats a mistake... the one thing you want to do to players that keep insisting is to show them exactly how the game is played. if you dont carry the little rule book jump on a computer and get the relative information. Actually visit the UDE site and show them in their face that said information isnt online. Then if you have access to the judge's list jump on that and show them that they are mistaken. and if that fails as well jump on Netrep.

You cannot go wrong when you have 3 source's telling the same answer.

Now letting these peeps go will only mean 1 thing. They were right. and by doing that they feel that they are right so that the next time you see them / they enter a event they will keep at it with this "fake ruling from the phantom website" becuase already 1 person let it go.

what you want to do is make it stop from there. from right infront of you and not let it go any further. The longer it goes the longer this person will get their way when it comes down to cheating. Because that is what this is. Cheating.

I know one cat that used to tell me all sorts of outragous things that he saw on the UDE site, I proved him wrong countless times and eventually he started just going to me for answer becuase alot of the Regional judge's werent actually judging. but that is a whole other issue/ story.

Indeed. If they're not set straight they'll end up screwing someone.

Like a new player who would just take their "Experienced" insistance at face value.
