VJMP-JP022
Spirit of Malice - Gouka
Fire/Undead/6/2200/1900
When there's a Fire attribute monster on your field, you can special summon this card from your hand. If it's special summon this way, destroy a Fire attribute monster on your field. During your Standby Phase, special summon a [Fireball Token] (Fire/Pyro/1/100/100) to your field in defense mode. Sacrifice a Fire attribute monster outside of this card from your field, increase this card's attack strength by 500 until end of turn.

If you don't see the insane power of this card, read this review

Okay. this card have ALOT of pluses. And overall, it fits the theme of Zombie Phoenix so much it's not even funny.

#1: Although it's a LV6, being able to special summon from hand limits the chances of being a dead card. Of course, with this effect, you have to destroy a Fire Monster that was on your field. But this is easy. Just search out a Normal monster by Sangan or something and normal summon, and then special summon this and bomb whatever. The prob is, that this is the ONLY Fire Zombie monster ever printed. (There was no Zombie with Fire Attribute until now) So you have to run other monsters then Zombies to make this card work. (Not to mention most Zombies are Earth or Dark) But there's the SPoN. And yeah, bombing SPoN, you'll get him back ANYWAY along with Heavy Storm activation so why not? And as the article says, you can use Volcanic Bullet. Other ways is to use Fire Recruiters like Masked Dragon, UFO Turtle, or ROTA a Fire Attribute Warrior. (I don't know, Command Knight?)

#2: But that issue isn't that bad. Since this IS a Zombie that only have 1900DEF, Pyramid Turtle can search it. And being 2200ATK means no Cyber Dragon issues. Seriously, this card will literally replace all of Ryu Kokki in the Zombie Build of OCG IMO. And there's always Book of Life as well. Ryu Kokki is just a 2400ATK beatstick. This thing is 2200ATK (higher then Cyber Dragon, good enough) and MORE.

#3: Why is this card better then Ryu Kokki. During your stand-by phase. it creates a Fire token of LV1/100ATK/100DEF Now, before you say "It's a weakass token monster". This Token have ABSOLUTELY NO RESTRICTIONS. Which means you CAN Tribute it for a Tribute summon. Hmm, a free special summon monster during your stand-by Phase that can be tributed for a tribute summon. Why, this card have a built in Treeborn FROG! And we all know the evil powers of Treeborn Frog. This will help out to get your Vampire Lord or SPoN stuck in your hand alot more quickly. (Even a Hand of N with this fire token is instant SPoN. See the combo here?) A card that literally creates a Treeborn Frog situation WHILE you can still have s/t on your side of the field... is just sick. (Heck, you can get a Treeborn Frog AND a Fire Token to get 2x free tributable monsters on the field at one shot if you can... i.e. AGAIN SPoN)

#4: Finally, if you got nothing to tribute. You can tribute the fire token to make this card 2700ATK. Now this card will kill anything in battle including Monarch/Jinzo. Ryu Kokki at most have to suicide against it. This card have no prob with that issue... see the evilness of this card. I mean, when we see a monster that can be special summoned from HAND and have a potential 2700ATK beatstick... there's a problem... (I thought Konami learned their lessen with Gors... I guess not...) Seriously, most of the time, you'll get him by either Pyramid Turtle, or just normal summon Fire Monster and then immediately special summon him...

#5: And somewhat unimportant. A free Fire Monster on the field does support alot of the Pyro/Fire Monsters that needs to tribute and/or need Fire Attribute Monsters on field to get it's effect. (Gaia Soul, Ultimate Baseball Kid, Command Knight, Solar Flare Dragon, all the Hiita monsters, etc.)

--------

This card IMO, was DEFINTELY created for the Zombie Phoenix build. And now that we got 3x SPoN unrestricted legal release, I don't see why not to pack 3x of these guys and then run 2~3x SPoN with 3x Pyramid Turtles to 2~3x Vampire Lords to truely make an insanely scary zombie deck. Of course to do all this, you have to keep him on the field face-up. (People will Book of Moon this to make him NOT to create those tokens during stand-by phases. Or just outright destroy him immediately with a card effect)

When this card comes out in USA, I'll definately rate it like 9.5/10 or something.

Thanks for the review and information dzero. I am currently working on a Zombie deck and am now drooling over this potential card. May be the first piece of cardboard I'd be willing to spend >$20 on.

Kinda sad that the YGO GX manga version, this card wasn't NEARLY this broken.

The original card. (It was played by Misawa, i.e. Bastion. It's his Fire Deck that we never seen in the anime)

#1: It was a Fusion Monster. And it can ONLY be fusion summoned. (No Metamorphsis)
#2: The Fusion material is actually the fireball token. You fuse 3x Fireball Token, with a specific Fusion Spell card (not a Poly). Bastion had a special Continuous Trap Card that if any monster goes to the graveyard by hand or on the field, he creates a Fireball Token. (e.g. Card Destruction, Fox Fire, Graceful Charity, etc.) And these tokens CANNOT be tributed for a tribute Summon.
#3: The ONLY effect was that you tribute a Fireball token monster to boost it's ATK by 100 for each of them (It's ATK is 2200ATK/1900DEF like this version)

Another words. No Treeborn Frog effect, no Zombie (i.e. no Pyramid Turtle) and no special summoning from hand effect. And the ATK increase was just 100 for each, not 500ATK for each Fire Attribute tributed... definately nowhere near this level... what is Konami thinking...
