Can Penguin Soldier return himself?

Hello

If my Penguin Soldier is attacked by a monster with an Attack higher than my Defence, can I return my Penguin Soldier to my hand? or is it destroyed and hence not available for return?

I guess the same issue exists if my face-down Hane-Hane is attacked and destroyed?

Please advise.

Thanks

Unless they aren't destroyed. If they are flip summoned, or if they survive the attack (Waboku) then they may certainly bounce themselves.

True.. to go further off-thread :D, they can't 'bounce' ANY card if Skill Drain is active.

But about the thread...
No they can't 'bounce' themselves, because they are considered destroyed at the activation of their effects. So they are already usable for Premature Burial and such cards :p

Hope this answered your question.

Let's clarify one more thing here.

Penguin Soldier and Hane-Hane, and the like, still get thier effects if flipped and destroyed by an attack. They cannot target themselves if destroyed by that attack but their effects still activate and resolve. If they survive the attack they can target themselves, but it must be clear they are surviving the attack. In addtition, if there are no legal targets when thier effect activates, the effects are still placed on the chain and still resolve, even if it is for no effect.

Ouch! *dies from the scathing blow just dealt to him and the others*

But in defense of myself, there really are some people in this world who don't know that these monsters CAN bounce themselves if they aren't destroyed.

I once played Change of Heart on my opponent's F/D monster, and, upon learning that it was Man-Eater Bug, flip summoned it and destroyed it. They then flew into a huge rant about how I can't use its effect to destroy itself and what not. I just thought I should point that out.

Also, Skill Drain only affects monsters that "remain" face-up on the field. If Penguin Soldier activates his effect to return himself to hand, isnt he no longer face-up on the field???

Skill Drain doesn't prevent activation, only successful resolution if monster is still face-up on the field.

Ruling #8 of Skill Drain:
"Skill Drain" will negate Flip Effects, and you can chain the activation of "Skill Drain" to the activation of a Flip Effect, but you cannot activate "Skill Drain" in the Damage Step because it does not specifically modify ATK or DEF, so you cannot chain "Skill Drain" to a Flip Effect that is activated because a monster was attacked while face-down.

But an already activated Skill Drain will prevent the effect of Penguin Soldier from bouncing any monsters (as long as Penguin Soldier is still on the field when his effect resolves). And since Compulsory Evacuation Device, Mystik Wok, Interdimensional Matter Transporter, Book of Moon, and such would 1) need to be able to target the monster (which could not happen to a Penguin Soldier who had already been destroyed by damage calculation) and 2) none of these can be activated in the Damage Step even if Penguin Soldier hadn't been destroyed by Damage Calculation.

Masterwoo - Penguin Soldier's effect is the one that has to resolve to bounce monsters. If Skill Drain is active the effect will be prevented from resolving so no bouncing will occur. Though the above mentioned methods for chaining to the effect of Penguin Soldier to get it off the field (outside of battle) can all allow a successful bounce once Penguin Soldier is no longer under the influence of Skill Drain.

Is that far enough off topic for ya?

When I wrote this, it was with the intent that maybe someone would remember the "Magician of Faith vs Skill Drain" ruling, where it said that if you chained Book of Moon to Magician of Faith's effect, you would still activate her effect to return a Spell Card to hand from the Graveyard.

Guess I didnt stimulate enough thought...

You can still chain Book of Moon to Waboku, if your opponent doesnt, respond while Skill Drain is active.
