Gravekeeper's Watcher and DDV

If my opponent plays Deck Devastation Virus against me, and I have a Gravekeeper's Watcher in my hand, and at least 1 card in my hand that would be destroyed because of DDV, can I activate the effect of Gravekeeper's Watcher to negate and destroy Deck Devastation Virus?

Would this be any different if I have no cards in hand that would be destroyed by DDV other than Gravekeeper's Watcher?

I'm inclined to think that I can't do this because it's not guaranteed that DDV will destroy anything. For that matter, I'm not sure whether or not cards in hand are considered "discarded" by DDV or just "sent" to the Graveyard.

"Deck Devastation Virus" doesn't make you discard cards in your hand, it destroys them. Says so right in the effect.

"Gravekeeper's Watcher" can only be used when your opponent activates an effect that would make THEM discard, not YOU. The rulings for "Gravekeeper's Watcher" make this perfectly clear...lol.
